Yes
So I'm thinking of cancelling Sky because I've been made redundant. It's costing £77 pounds a month for the full package and multiroom. Just wondered if anyone has cancelled recently and would care to share their experience!

Steve

Last time I cancelled had difficulty getting through on the cancellation line maybe it's better now

They accepted my cancellation then 3 weeks later offered it half price. as long as u are not in your 12 month contract u r fine.

My GF has just moved in with me and so cancelled at her old place (which she's rented out).

She had no trouble contacting them, but did struggle to get them to understand that she didn't want any deals or reductions, just wanted to cancel. They require 30 days notice, so if you do it today you'll still m=have it for another month. All the gear will remain yours.

Yeh, you'll get all the offers for a restricted period to try and keep you as a customer. I just tell folk that I'm leaving the country and have no need of it.

We have the full package and recently got a letter saying it was going up by another £4 in September. The wife phoned them up yesterday to reduce our package and they offered to scrap the increase and reduce the monthly amount by £16.50 for the next 12 months but only if we agreed to another 12 month contract. They suggested we ring them again in 11 months time to see what could be done then. We have agreed to that.

I cancelled all of mine, it was getting to expensi\/e for hardly any of us watching it, teen is in her room twittering most nights, little one is minecraft and i read... i had no problems though they do try their hardest to offer you deals to stay so you just ha\/e to be strong and say no, it was slightly easier for me as i had internet with them too but it was restricted because i am so rural so i told them i had no choice

Give the cancellation team a ring, often they'll give you a decent discount for 6 months or so to try and keep you as a customer.

Also might be worth having a look at Freesat. It uses your existing satellite dish and is completely free, you just need to buy a box.

If you cancel Sky you'll automatically have Freesat since you already have all the gear.

Yeah, you'll still have access to all of Sky's free channels if you cancel, but Freesat is an entirely different service offered by the BBC/ITV. It has a few HD channels and you can also record/pause/rewind live tv etc., if I remember correctly. Not bad for £0 per month ;)

The only other alternative I'm aware of is Freeview, but I don't think they have as many channels. I suppose you could always give Netflix a go - about £5 a month last time I looked, way cheaper than Sky and available on phones/tablets etc.

Except is isn't quite as cheap as that to get record/pause/rewind you need a Freesat+ box, looking at the Freesat site the cheapest box is £130,so quite an outlay for the features when the Freesat from Sky service is totally free (minus the + features of course).

It would pay for itself in a couple of months based on OP's current monthly cost, but yeah still a fair old whack I suppose. I think you lose all the recording/pausing/rewinding features with Sky's free service, which is a shame. I'm glad to see a lot more competition out there for Sky these days though - BT, Virgin Media plus all the online services too... although that hasn't stopped Sky putting their prices up!

you can still get the pause rewind record service from sky if you cancel and just have their free channels......its £10 per month

When i have ever tried to cancel Sly in the past, i find it funny that i'm always put on hold trying to get through to the cancellations department because they're always busy.

They're not that busy. I suspect you're just put on hold because they can :-)

Yeah we had similar... wanted to cancel (well I did but didn't) they asked what they could do to keep me... "6 months free".... "well we cannot do that but how about 12 months half price".... "erm ok"

Also we don't have the luxury but a good friend lives in an area that can receive virgin media... played them both off.. and has a great deal, so if thats available .. could always be an option for brokering a deal.... "Well virgin are offering x y and z for this.... so what can you do?"

Notoriously for any supplier, the canx dept is always the hardest to get through to, and the least staffed....

So the same cost as for a freesat+ box but only for a years use, sounds expensive to me

I cancelled it 6 months ago, still get the letters offering 12 months 1/2 price , last phone call I asked them to take me off the database which she did while I was on the phone so hopefully that's it

Lets face it everything with sky is expensive, i haven't subscibed to it for the same reason, to be honest i don't see it worth it, you don't get many channels free... i just need to look in to what is a better option, freeview or roku box or something

I took out infinity with BT and they gave me a youview box, it has all the HD channels on Freeview records and pauses TV for free

The scroll back feature is good, you just go back up to a week and it plays the programme

Just have the family entertainment Package .Cuts the monthly down. I Have it with Phone and broadband and pay about £40.per month. Most calls done on mobile or friends on dear old Facebook....

I have just gone over to BT for phone and broadband, i did look at the basic TV package but i don't have the Ariel wires sorted yet, sky chopped it when they put the dish in.... i can't have infinity either because of my location

That's pretty reasonable and mine would have been similar but for the same package you have, actually mine was entertainment+ it was £64, my internet was their sky connect which is more than double my old bill for a limited 40gb limit, we watch alot of netflix and now tv so it wasn't enough , hence me changing all because of where i live

Have to admit I would b lost without it. Movies and sports are frequently watched in our house.

In fairness yes if they are being watched all the time it's not so bad, mine became expensive purely down to where i live, my initial concern was i didn't want the kids to go without too much, but sacrifices had to be made.. my daughter spends a lot of time in her room, twitter/youtube netflix etc and my youngest he's 6 is normally found playing minecraft or watching it, so the actual tv channels just weren't being watched enough to warrant keeping it, plus i am a huge book worm so even in the evening it wasn't being watched a great deal.....
netflix is used mainly, there are loads that we all watch plus i have now tv, admittedly that's £8.99 p/m but it's not a contract, that way we do get all the films, there will be some months we won't have it..

The only thing i do miss is the pause rewind etc, it's back to timing coffee/loo breaks with adds or boring bits lol

Why not just cancel the direct debit?

Steve.
thats what I did at first they then sent a letter asking for payment, I was going to just ignore it but the missus didn't want to do that

I got mine knocked down by cancelling to about half price for up to 12 months but, best of all, no new contract or tie-in, so I'm still free to cancel. Having got it down to under £40 per month including movies etc. I feel it's ok value now so we'll see how it goes for the next 12m.

When I changed insurance companies a few years ago, the new company said just cancel the direct debit and that I didn't need to tell the old company.

Although it is polite to contact Sky (in this case) I would still cancel the direct debit first then just inform Sky that I had done it rather than rely on them to cancel it.

Steve.

But if you cancel DDs, the company will still apply for it at least once and you will get returned DD charges from your bank.

We cancelled Sky when we moved in 98, even then they tried their hardest to keep you with various offers
So many channels full of crap back then, no doubt the same now if freeview is anything to go by.

Cancelled Sky here in 2012...yet still have the full package :sneaky:
