Anyone live in or been to canada. were looking to got for a holiday next year one week there then a week in florida,
Would like somewhere prefrabily on the east cost cos of this. where we could go whale watching and go to parks to see moose ekls and bears, it dont have to be a big city, also i ll be driving and it will be my first time driving abroad so dont want anywhere to complicated
 
I've driven across it if that counts ;)

On the East Coast there's Toronto or Quebec which are great cities, but they're a very long way from the sea ! West Coast wise you could go to Vancover where you can go whale watching and you're a few days drive from the Rockies and national parks full of wildlife..
 
hmm a few other people have said the west cost to, how much longer flight time would that be?
whats it like driving there?
 
Well I drove / well shared driving for almost 5000 km and I've never driven on the 'wrong side' of the road before. I found it very easy to be honest. Out on the highways, the roads are wide and well signposted and no roundabouts !. In cities a little more exciting as its the basic grid system, so if you know you want to go left or right you need to be in the right lane as some streets are 5 lanes across ! A lot of one ways too but again well signposted. Vancover was great as it has an englishy style system and feel to it. You'll love it !

Vancover to Florida is probably a good 5/6 hour flight
 
i have been tempted befor to drive in orlando but never did, but will do in canada.
Its the flight times thats kinda putting me of vancover. i mean im guessing it will be 9 hours flight from london to vancover. then 6 hours back to florida then another 8 hours back home. would that be do able you think or should i be looking more at the east coast. confused
 
Flight time from Vancover to London is 11 hours with a quick stop in Calgary (well thats what we did) Whether it's do-able or not is up to you. You'll lose 1/2 day of your holiday between Vancover and Orlando and how ever many hours getting to canada and back to london. On the east coast you could fly into Quebec which a great little city with a very French flavour. Primary language with English a close second. It would take a day of driving out to Novia Scotia where I expect you'll see stunning scenery and animals, possibly whales but as I skipped this part of Canada out you'd have to google !
 
Personally i'd bin the Florida part of the holiday and go to Vancouver and Whistler (if you want to keep the flight times down) :)

Or you can go to Atlantic Canada and see some wildlife up there. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, New Foundland. Very rugged coastline and very quiet, you're not too far from Maine up there so you'll get to see some Whales up there. Then the drive down to Florida isn't too bad. I drove Boston to Daytona and it took about 14 hours, with one stop off for sleep.
 
I Stayed at Hamilton near Toronto, a lot of intresting places to visit, but if your going you really should try to visit Niagara Falls, it's the most awsome site I have ever seen.

Though if you walk 20m from the front by the falls it's the tackiest and most nasty place you'll ever visit! :lol:

took 8 hrs from manchester direct,


vancouver and victoria are amazing well worth the visit, roads are also ok to drive on, not too busy at all, i drove through vancouver at 10am having never driven a lefthooker before and i had no problem.


have also been to montreal, ottowa and toronto, all very nice places but vancouver/vic was my favourite :)

i actually was very disappointed by niagra, the place is total aimed around extracting money from tourists, its busy, tacky, yes the falls are spectaular but its one part of my trip to ontario i would have skipped and instead spent more canoeing time in the national parks!
 
I agree with you Niagara itself is not very good but the Falls themselves are well worth the visit imho.

yeah we have now ditched the florida part, so 2 weeks in canada, but also looking at maybe alaska. and are lass as even been looking at wildlife holidays in the artic, and the rain forrests and that.
 
I think you made the right decision. I only live 3 hours from Niagara Falls so I've gotten used to the kitsch. Matter of fact I see it allot like Blackpool great fun if you take it for what it is. I've always wanted to go on a cruise off the coast of Alaska but I'm told it is mostly pensioners. Which isn't an issue if you are one but at the time I was only 22. Also the size of the mosquitoes in Alaska is legendary. All in all though I envy you your trip!
 
really i thought the ones in alaska would be small ? yeah i m really looking forward to it, once we deecide were we are going, i mean florida we can do it again where as this may be a once in a lifetime trip.
not trying to sound to general but what is the difference between canada and alaska. and wildlife wise
 
What are you actually looking to do on your trip? Do you mind hours of traveling? Do you have young children? and when are you looking at going?
 
Wildlife wise western canada and Alaska are much the same BUT I htink you might find the cities in Canada more entertaining. I have to say if you want to make a trip to America while you are in the West ,Yosemite is absolutely beautiful and not to far a flight from the west of Canada and it'll give you something slightly different to view. Just my 2p though.

As for driving.... I lived in England for the last 3 years and just moved back to America. It is the dogone left hand turns that I had to keep chanting to myself keep right keep right.... But the roads are so wide and well marked you will find it a pleasure to drive. Also the parking spaces are the size of 2 in England so you can even fit the largest SUV in one!
 
nope no young children were both 26 looking at 4th august next year. Basically were both into wildlife so would like to see lots of this and nice scenery, its for our honnymoon so we'd like somewhere nice to, But were not in to clubbing and that so at the most it would be a drink in a bar. hours of travelling would be ok, we have seen one that takes you from the east to the west of canada by coach and train which looks good.

In 2 weeks? I'd leave that for a month+ trip! If you're going by bus/train you'd get days and days of everything looking exactly the same :P

BC is probably the best place for you. How about taking a couple of a days for a kayak tour around Vancouver island? they'll show you whales and bears from a bit of a different angle! You could then take a sea plane up the west coast and tour around some parks or something. Then maybe inland to Banff and lake louise? Whistler is also worth a visit (even in the summer as there's still loads to do!), it's a 30min flight from Vancouver and a 3(?)hr train journey (you should do the train one way and fly the other).

Toronto is definitely worth a visit so i'd try to fit that in too. I was in Canada for 2 weeks earlier this year and basically did Toronto (5 days) + Niagara, Victoria (2 days), Vancouver (8 days) + Whistler.
 
Every time people ask about Canada, the West coast & Toronto get mentioned. Yet Quebec never does. There is a great expanse of wilderness and some lovely cities to see up in Quebec; I know it's full of French speaking people but don't let that put you off as it's still a great place to go ;).

Could be worth a thought if you're thinking of doing Ontario; you're on the same timeline then and it's a short hop across to New Brunswick for some rugged coastlines and fresh lobster & crabs.
 
As ppl have said above

Niagra Falls = Blackpool with some 'awesome' falls in the background. My mate and I lasted 2 hours there before we scarpered.

Mid Canada is very dull. Landscape wise boring, flat. Winnipeg was the most interesting place we found. Driving west after 1000 miles of nothing, we whooped when we seen the Rockies in the distance !!

Quebec/Montreal. I liked Montreal. Loverly little city, a bit like Lyon with Canadians

Vancover & Island : Well worth the visit for landscape and wildlife

Whistler : Got there in April. It was deader than a dead thing stamped with death on it !

Banff, Lake Louise : Spectacular scenery but not much to do in Banff unless you're into the Ski/snowboarding scene. You can walk around it in a day !

Rockies : A must for anyone visting Canada.. !


Irish Bars : Honestly there is one on almost every street corner and in every town/city we visted and we visted lots on our journey. Whatever hotel/motel we stayed in, just around the corner we found one ! And for some reason all the barmaids wear tartan miniskirts.. :D

Whistler is very busy in the summer (after May i think) when the bike park opens! It's probably busier in the summer than the winter!
