Yes
My monitor gives a change in the contrast of an image as my line of view changes from directly perpendicular to the screen, to slightly elevated (I guess it also changes as i move from side to side, but that aspect is easy to avoid). It's enough to make an image look different. I have no idea what my images look like to others, and rather tellingly, allows me to see the images of others with incorrect contrast / colours.

It is an old HP L1950g monitor. I could buy any other monitor unseen, and then find it might not be much better, hence my request for suggestions.
It will be in a cabinet, so my space is limited, a 21" 16:9 would be fine (that cabinet aperture is around 57cm wide). I don't need the most highly calibrated device, just something reasonably priced that doesn't suffer the same problem in the angle of view. Anyone help?

Yes, I see. Plenty of similar threads. I guess that newer monitors will be better in regards to the viewing angle, so one of many might work for me.

The important thing is to use an IPS monitor as they're designed for a large viewing angle. They're more expensive than non IPS panels for obvious reasons. The problem you might have is getting one small enough to fit your space.
