Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good beginners photography book?

I really want to step up my game but for all intense purposes I'm a beginner.

The subjects I'd like to cover (in multiple books if necessary) are:

composition
exposure
lighting
colour
post production

anything else I missed???

Have a look here for some inspiration!!

Failing that there are a couple of books I have found useful and informative.

Understanding exposure - Probably the most recommended book on TP

The Photographers eye - Micheal Freeman - Deals with composition.

Digital Landscape Photography - John and Barbara Gerlach - This is on the go at the moment and I have found it most informative about exposure and histograms

Hi,
'Understanding Exposure' is the best book you will ever read!!

Cheers,

Dunc

Got to agree, i struggled with understanding the basics until i read "understanding exposure"

A must

regards
Steve

Save your money on books, and just buy a dvd called Introduction to Photography, by Karl Taylor. It's got everything you need to get you started, all explained in simple terms. If you do purchase one you also get a whole load of free tutorials which you can watch on his website. www.karltaylorphotography.com.

I would start with understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson. It's an rays read and a great intro.

But you can't read it on the loo or in the bath.

Try the Digital Photographers Handbook by Tom Ang. I have read it cover to cover many times and find it brilliant but I'm sure there are many others.

Hi,

I enjoyed reading "Travel Photography: A Guide to Taking Better Pictures" by Lonely Planet. It's easily to carry around with you and goes through all the basics, page by page.

For blogs I'd recommend http://digital-photography-school.com

Good luck! Natalie

Another vote for Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure"

I like Scott Kelby's stuff too. Short & to the point.

Still can't see why people rave about that Bryan Peterson book.

Didn't like the writing style, out of date and far less useful than many others on the same subject.
Glad I only got it from the library, been gutted to have spent good money on it

One flew over the cuckoos nest ... Cracking read.

I will second this, especially with the items you have listed and then go for specialised books such as Understanding Exposure which is useful

I would go with "Understanding Exposure" as the first book to read for your requirements.

I would then go with "Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting" was is also brilliant.

I have just ordered "Mastering Canon EOS Flash Photography" as I've realised that the ability to use flash properly is an essential part of being a rounded photographer.

Regarding composition, not sure you need a book for that? (just bear in mind the rule of thirds).
