sorry folks.....not used this site very much and this question must've been asked lots but with my limited computer skills i couldn't find any info. i am looking for a compact camera with wide angle and optical zoom (want to take landscapes and pics of pet dog) that takes sharp photos. i'm a novice but would like to improve so would like manual control also. £200 - £300 i could go to. any suggestions much appreciated :)

Does it have to be a compact ??

For that budget you could get a second hand DSLR with kit lens which you could use on full auto and give you more flexibility if the bug bites :)

yeah.....i'm looking for a compact just for the ease of carrying it around with me.....

Canon S90 looks good or Panasonic LX3

I have the LX3 - not a lot of optical zoom but otherwise superb + HD video. Wide angle for your landscapes and an f2 lens (as is the S90 I think).

Or you could try the Canon G range, but keep in mind they do tend to be a bit bigger.

Panasonic Lumix TZ7?

I've got the older TZ5 and its a brilliant little camera with a wide angle and great zoom, does great HD video and is not too big to be able to carry around.

The only thing that would become limiting is the lack of full manual control, but I very rarely miss it, I have plenty of other cameras to play around with that sort of thing. For me and my family to just be able to pick up a camera and take good pictures, the TZ5 has been brilliant

Panasonic tz6 ,7,8 or 10 OR LX3 have the tz6 and its a cracker try digigood on fleabay yours gwh

I got a Panasonic TZ7 last weekend and was blown away by the quality and the zoom range. Spent a whole day with it at the 'quins game at the stoop then out in clubs in london town in the evening and I was very impressed. Would definitely get my recommendation :)

How compact do you want it?

I bought a Ixus 100IS, there's compact.

A great 'little' camera IMHO

TZ6 or TZ7, both have Leica lenses and superb optical zoom plus great image quality. I chose the TZ6 as i didn't want the HD video. Apart from that and one or two other little things they are the same.

The Panasonic TZ range are great, however if you want manual controls they don't have them or Raw if you wanted that. Otherwise they are very good. If you can sacrifice the long zoom, I would take the LX3 over the TZ7 etc.

LX3 for me got one last year great little camera i know there's no zoom as such but that wide angle is great, also a nice looker very retro

Before the DSLR I've had a couple of Sony compacts and found them to be superb :)

Thanks very much for all your suggestions..very much appreciated.....sorry for delay in replying but I've been away for a few days. Thanks again....great site....I'll be back :)
