Can you leave your wife behind?

And as usual the TP spirit kicks in with even the most simplest of topics.

I can't see what all the fuss is about.....I often go out for meals on my own dressed as a woman, and everyone stays well away from me!!

Interesting read, from the op's original post, very difficult situations, but duty manager should have been on toll to deal with, or have some sympathy with the member of staff, probably only doing what he was told, as per following discussion, I can't remember the last time I went into a chain pub that hasn't got a cash machine in it.

Personally, I wouldn't take my wife anywhere I wouldn't be happy (or she not be happy) waiting for a while on her own. Then again, I feel 1/2 naked without a hundred quid or so in my wallet.

Ok thanks for all the comments, some made me smile some my jaw hit the desk.

Wife and I laughed about it all the way home because that was the best reaction to a strange request.

We have been back since several times but we always sit near the door so the wife can make a brisk exit.

And yes the same chap is still there and always says hello and I nod back.

i would of left mine there and said she likes cleaning the dishes lol
i think i would of told them to f - off it is there reasponsobility to make sure they have a back up plan in place

they still have the old swipe type systems we replaced all our machines a year or so ago and got the swipe types we refued them only because there is several cash machines within a walk of no more then 2 mins away

but the problem was not of the OP's making. It was there machines that had stopped working. In such circumstances I would not have left any form of deposit, just my name and address.

exactly:)

I don't see what the fuss is about. Send the missus off to the cash point and stay in the pub. Hopefully the cash point is some way away!

Well, per joe's point, "the missus" may not be happy going to the cashpoint on her own, or driving the car without the supporting presence of her husband. Note that I have never actually met a woman like this, but apparently they must exist. I haven't met one that wouldn't wait in a restaurant for 10 minutes either though.

All of that aside, the behaviour of the staff member was entirely inappropriate. It was the supplier's fault that the customer couldn't pay, the customer should not be inconvenienced as a consequence.

Good point well made....

Next option, drive to cash point with my wife and with the guy who wanted me to leave my missus behind. Give him the cash and let him walk back

driving?

What's all this about driving? Do you and your wife not drink when you go out to a bar/restaurant?

:D in our case tho we take turns driving :)
Completely agree with you BTW I would not dream about leaving my wife at the resturant while I get cash esp as it was their mistake

I left my wife behind once

Unfortunately though she managed to find me again

We very rarely drink alcohol in the UK. Spent too many years in the licensed trade serving aerosols and moping up after them! A taxi both ways works out marginally more expensive than busses while parking is free after 6pm in most of the city centre car parks.
I truly pity people who have to have a drink when they go out to enjoy themselves then lose all that pity when they whinge about having no money!

But most of us just enjoy to have a drink. Not because we have to, but because we like to.

I'm not quite sure why the chap behind the bar just didn't call the Manager as soon as the card machine started playing up, that may have been a better option.

Certainly as soon as the bar staff suggested I leave my Wife behind as security the Manager would have been called to attend to the problem that's for sure!
