OK Ive not long got into photography. I bought a nikon D80 with Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm lens.
My problem is when I move it onto the sports icon on the dial and take a picture my pictures are blurred.
The pictures Im taking are of dogs moving at high speed or dogs in midair just before bitiing a bite sleeve.
Can anyone tell me how to make these pictures clear and if its setting on the camera how to change the settings.

Also Im looking for advice on I want a good lens to take from a good distance of dogs moving high speed or once again biting on bite sleeves and anything to do with dogs being involved in dog sport.
All advice and help much appreciated thank you.

Hi renos, not that familiar with your camera but if I'm shooting my dogs (one is a whippet so can shift!) I use a setting called shutter priority and set the shutter speed to 1/500 sec. That should be quick enough to get the dogs and the camera will choose the aperture to match for you. If the light levels are too low then the camera will tell you (usually by a flashing symbol in the viewfinder) at which point you would need to change the ISO from 200 to 400 or 800 so it can get the exposure right for you.

Sounds like the dogs are just moving too quickly for the sports mode settings so take charge yourself :)

can anyone tell me how to do this on my Nikon D80 please

Turn the dial to S for shutter priority... and I don't have a D80 but on the D60 you then turn the scrolly thing on the back of the camera to change the shutter speed.

Have you not got the manual? That will tell you how to change the shooting settings and ISO. I know it's probably not the most exciting read but I'd recommend sitting down with the manual and camera and just working your way through it to learn what all of the buttons / dials do.

The manual of your camera is worth its weight in gold. Exept on ebay where its probably a couple of quid at most...
It's really worth your time reading through the sections that cover the main settings. As well as reading about shutter priority try the section o focussing mode. Quickly moving subjects are difficult to focus on and it won't help if you're nnot using the best mode.

Turn the dial to S on this you can change the shutter speed. Just have a play increasing it until you get the effect you want. Your manual should be able to tell you in more detail if you need it.

You can download a D80 user manual from the Nikon UK site - support & downloads section.

The Nikon Field Guides by David D. Busch are simplified alternatives - Amazon or Ebay are the best places to find them.

Also try panning the camera as you shoot, Panning = moving the camera SMOOTHLY following the path of the dog, whilst pressing the shutter SMOOTHLY ....:D

Have a few pratices,it does come to you fairly quickly and will get you more keepers. keepers = shots that are good and kept not deleted

the more you pratice with the camera, the more keepers you will have.
and as said,RTBM . = read the bloomin manual , :lol:it is boring, but does help, but most of all, don't be afraid to ask us.:thumbs:

Thanks guys will take all of your advice in and will read the manual!!!
Any advice on the lens?
Think I might enroll in college course.
