Can we see more (film vs X) comparison shots?

I've really enjoyed the two threads here recently comparing the same shot taken with a film camera and a digital camera. I'd been wondering how to do something similar with some images I wanted to put up on the "Show us yer film shots" thread, but I'd realised it wasn't appropriate to put non-film shots there. So here, if you like, is a thread where you can show your film shots alongside digital equivalents... or against other types of film, or other cameras with film, or... Up to you really!

Does that sound interesting? I'll start it off in a minute...

A few weeks ago we spent a couple of days in the Ceiriog Valley in eastern wales. One afternoon we went a bit further west, to the wonderful Pistyll Rhaedr waterfall. I wanted to experiment a bit with different shutter speeds, and I took quite a few shots with the X10, before we hiked up above the falls and shot a few more there. I then remembered I had my ancient Pentax ME loaded with Provia 100F in my bag, so that came out, first at the top and then back at the bottom. Sadly, although this was still supposed to be part of the "experiment", I forgot to take any notes of shutter speeds etc! I don't have a tripod, and I was using speeds on the X10 as long as 1/6; many shots show problems, but one or two were better, braced on the bridge rail.

Anyway, here are the first two, from the small falls at the top:

And these were of the main fall (apparently the highest direct fall in the UK, and higher than Niagara!):

I didn't take these with a view to them being comparison shots as such, but they are fun anyway. Perhaps I should have cropped the X10 shots to make it less obvious which is which.

I'm not sure what the X10 film simulation was set at, but it's usually Velvia and sometimes Provia, so I was a bit surprised that the X10 comes out rather more muted. It has a reputation for rather bold colours!

Anyway, I hope you like them!

(BTW any comments on how to improve my waterfall-shooting also welcome!)

Well, since you asked :)

As with my other thread, I didn't reference either image for PP, just went with what felt right.

i do apologise to the purists of this forum. Sorry.

I find it quite interesting though :)

Yes, me too. I think I shall try and do some comparisons between my Yash Mat and D300.

I'll try and do a 3 way one, 5D mk2, A-1 and RB67 :)

I shall do a 5 way! Now since this is a film comparison, I'll update the thread... sometime in 2013, when I get round to developing the film

Great idea for a thread. It's always interesting to see the results!

I have one; a Canon 500D vs Pentax 6x7 MLU - I actually used the 500D as a light meter for the Pentax which is why I have the two similar shots! Apologies for the less than scientific framing, heh.

6x7 + 90mm 2.8 (f/4, 1/125, Kodak Portra 160)

Both combined:

Although the 500D image is sharper, I believe that's the scanner at fault rather than the negative. The colours and dynamic range are both better from the film than from the sensor.

Wow Jak, where are you? That's the tree I used for last month's film challenge (the woods off Rocky Lane near the A46, yes?)!

BTW the Pentax 6*7 gives a much more mysterious image than the 500D, IMHO! (Not just a Pentax fanboy speaking, either!)

I thought I'd try another comparison here, when I realised I'd taken shots of a wind band playing in Abbey Fields on both my X10 (with the Velvia film setting) and the Pentax ME, with Kodak Ektar 100. I've cropped the film to 4*3 just to even things out...

I thought the comparison is pretty interesting... the only PP is a bit of levels in both of them. The difference in the reds is startling, not to mention the gray suit. I guess I should be adjusting the white balance, but that level of PP/Aperture adjustment isn't a strength yet!

Here are two of mine, not really a fair comparison as I accidentally underexposed the velvia, but anyway 1 - Velvia on RB67, 2 D300 digital

You know, the D300 may give more detail in the foreground, but the RB67 and Velvia win for me by a country mile!

Of the comparisons posted so far the digital shots are sharper and more detailed but the film shots are more atmospheric. For me the film shots have a more 'magical' feel.

Someone post some LF v digi comparisons!

Great thread!

Ooh, let me get my velvia and my S3 out - that'd be an interesting comparison!

Don't worry, the flatbed lorry is coming to assist you in the coming weeks

(I'm not letting this one go ;) )

I'll come down to London and knock your house down with it if you arent careful ;)

So THAT'S how minor earthquakes occur... that reflex mirror moving!

Sorry to drag up an older thread but I actually did one of these this week!

This was taken with my Minolta X-300 on Poundland Agfa special. Approx 25 elephants at f11 or 16 (can't remember exactly)!

And here is the same view but taken slightly earlier in the evening a couple of days later with D3100 (EXIF on the Flickr):

I prefer the film shot but I do like the sky in the digital one. The thing about raw files is the temptation to edit, edit and edit some more. I am guilty of this but I do find it a chore!

I'd forgotten about this thread. Here's a couple from Bruge.

Samsung EX1. I really like this camera, takes very nice images and its small and very well made.

Yash Mat. I really like this camera, takes really nice images and its huge and really well made. :D

I'm torn. I think I prefer the digi image this time, I don't think the film shot is as good as it could be and it certainly has a different look to the digital shot...but

Andy. Looks like the scan has a green cast. Try fixing the white balance.

Here are a couple of shots to add to the digital /film comparison thread. Slightly different angles on the same subject but taken three days apart. I am clearly a creature of habit.

First shot was taken with my Nikon F3HP and Tamron 28mm, shot as part of the Agfa Vista Challenge. That film is growing on me!

The Second was shot with on my Fuji X100, while out shooting the second roll of Agfa Vista. Fuji was in Velvia emulation mode.

I know which I prefer.

Jao, absolutely love the dramatic sky in the film shot, although that is obviously more to do with when you took it rather than the medium of choice.

Thanks for the comment. The sky was slightly more interesting when I took the film shot but I think the real difference was the effect of the polariser in the film one. The learning for me is that I need to get a circular polariser to use with the X100. Great thing about this hobby, learning all the time!

I prefer the film shot too but would be interested to see the digi shot with the WB changed on the RAW file. I think it would look much more like the film shot.

Wow Trevor, the Acros really worked well there, didn't it!

It just so happens that I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to take my RZ and XP1 to Amsterdam in a couple of weeks time ... and I've loaded a roll of Reala 100 in the colour back and there's plenty of Velvia in the fridge. Perfect opportunity to try the film presets on the XP1 against a proper-sized negative* :D

* Subject to Enjoyment Control not objecting to my bag containing more camera gear than clothes :help:

Sadly not shot on the same day.

and there we have the difference that cannot be quantified.

Loved the texture of the Acros shot.

When i get towards the end of this roll of PanF in 35mm I'll do a comparison with my 5D2, might have some Fuji 690 and 5D shots from New York that I can compare.

* Subject to Enjoyment Control not objecting to my bag containing more camera gear than clothes :help:

Yeah, she didn't have to object, when I did a trial pack it was clear that my ambition outweighed the size of my carry-on bag. :shake:

In the event, she didn't say anything at all but merely gave me a look which spoke volumes. :coat:

Though I reckon I can slip my Isolette II into the bag along with my XP1 and a couple of disposables...
