had to chuckle at the news today ( although its not a laughing matter ) a body in a suitcase has been pulled out of a london canal ,o.k fine it does happen but the statement " THE POLICE ARE TREATING THIS WITH SUSPICION " had me rolling ,who the f**k do they think it was bloody houdini ,hands up anyone on here who can shut themselves in a suitcase then jump in a canal ,the mind totally boggles ,and the journalist/s probably managed to vote last week to :arghh: :arghh: :arghh:

I have a mug with a load of funny newspaper headlines printed on it and one of my faves is "Police alert on stolen drugs." :D

This is awful but I thought the same, Jeff. I can only hope the phrase was journalistic licence and not a verbatim report from the Police.

It had me laughing too.

Depending on what the post mortem says about the cause of death, they may be looking for someone who could kill herself first, *then* shut herself into the suitcase and jump into the canal. Now that really would be impressive!

To be fair to the police, upon recovering the body and with no evidence except the circumstances at that point, they have two possible statements: "We are treating this death as suspicious", or "We are not treating this death as suspicious".
In this case they took the smart option.

I think we all know that. What's been happening here is a sort of humour, based on the cognitive dissonance between the technical police definition of "suspicious" and the common usage of the word. You see, when the police say "suspicious" they mean "deserving of investigation", whereas ..... Oh I can't be bothered. Sorry.

I would never have guessed!

Actually I think you'll find they mean "there's a likelihood of illegal activity", because even when they don't treat a matter as suspicious, they'll investigate regardless to rule it out. ;)

Oh I see it must be a " open or shut case" then :exit:

Wasn't there that bloke allegedly killed by the spooks who was found inside a duffel bag in a locked cupboard? The verdict was actually suicide.

Gareth Williams. He worked for GCHQ and was on secondment to SIS when he died in 2010.

Ah thank you. Wikipedia says I misremebered - the bag he was in was padlocked on the outside and it was in a bath not a cupboard. The coroner's verdict was a formal version of "very suspicious indeed" but the police seem to have reckoned there was nothing particularly odd about it and that the most likely cause was "accidentally locking himself in a bag".

How else should they treat it until there's an investigation?

"Body found in suitcase in canal" hasn't yet determined cause of death. An offence has almost certainly been committed (setting aside the example of a sports bag in a bath tub), but whether it's extreme littering/unauthorised disposal of human remains or murder has still to be established.

Unless you're one of those know-it-all/psychics always ringing up the police to tell them what's happened? ;)

Reminds me of the TV series "Man in a suitcase".

Is 'extreme littering' in the same class of offenses as "loitering with intent to use a pedestrian crossing', 'being in possession of an offensive wife' and 'wearing a loud shirt during the hours of darkness'?'

No, it comes under Section 69 of the Ways and Means Act.

All deaths reported to the police will be dealt with either by using two routes 'sudden' death - for example an elderly person dying at home after an illness. Or as a 'suspicious' death when an obvious violent or unexplained death has taken placed, this involves a full photographic and forensic examination of the scene followed by forensic recovery of the body by CSIs and conveyed to the mortuary where a Home Office Pathologist will carry out the Post Mortem examination of the deceased. The Pathologist will if possible determine the cause of death which if unnatural will be investigated as a murder enquiry.

I much preferred it pre-Vegas when they were called SOCO.. it seemed so much more British..

A lot of forces still call them SOCO...jobs are advertised as such too :-)
Yanks haven't won yet!

Reminds me of a local newspaper report, following the theft of at least 5 tons of stone...

"The police believe that a vehicle may have been used"
