Hi guys

I've recently been shown an effect that a client of mine has seen in a pro wedding collection and she wants the exact same thing for her wedding that i'll be shooting.

Trouble is, I'm a little unsure of how the photographer set about it.

He had multiple shots of the same bride and groom at different stages of the song and in different areas of the dance floor in the same shot seamlessly.

I tried my hand at what I thought it could be here:

The thing is I can't imagine my multiplicity effect working very well when you have lots of different flashing lights all over the place. This was carefully shot so that the light and all the things around were still and consistant.

Does anyone know of a tutorial or post to help with this last dance effect i'm trying to create please???

many thanks

Personally I think this is going to be tricky to do for a first dance. For a start you only have a few minutes and secondly you'll need to use a tripod and keep people from walking in front of it or knocking it over. Secondly your probably going to miss the more intimate shots of the couple kissing etc that often happen during the first dance.
Then theres the different lighting from shot to shot, that may make it harder to comp together, finally the couple will tend to stay in the middle of the dance floor, you may have to get them to move around more to "space out" the images so they dont overlap too much, this is going to distract them and spoil any spontaneity.

Thanks for the reply wayne. So I think the effect I saw was pretty cutting edge however they did it. They pulled it off and it looked great even with all those distracting factors.
hmmmmm.......

If you attempt this, it will be a disaster and as Wayne says you will miss ou on the intimate shots of he first dance that can only be taken by being quick on your feet and ready to shoot off the cuff at a fleeting moments notice and that just cannot be done by being tripod mounted in a fixed position.
How about a second shooter attempting it and leaving you free?
Was the shot you saw perhaps shot after the actual first dance and with a little time set aside to shoot it ? This might be a good idea for yourself and even then I would discuss and maybe even rehearse it before the wedding if that's even possible.

If you get a first dance like I had last weekend you've no chance. With no more than a minute into the dance the floor was invaded by the guests. Good job I had already got the intimate shots.

Yep that happens too and its really annoying. :bang: at some weddings this seems to be the norm for some reason. Never understood it really, Bride and Groom dancing to there personal and intimate song that they chose, it just seems rude for everyone to swallow them up out of sight and sometimes barely a minute in.
What can be nice is the Father of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom (and vice versa) and the best man and chief bridesmaid joining them on the floor towards the end of the song, but this stampede is just crass imho.

Good luck anyway, whatever you try.

To create a shot like that needs careful staging & control.

Realistically that means you having TOTAL control of your subjects.
It wouldn't really work very well at a wedding first dance.

its an aside, but I wouldn't agree with you at all on that. It makes it hard to photograph, but every wedding thats happened at its always seemed like a real celebration by the guests, not crass at all. Invariably they're also the most fun weddings

Imho only Hugh and you are entitled to yours of course and it could be different customs/ideas in different areas, who knows . I doubt it has much bearing on the level of fun at the wedding though. lol
