Can the price of football jerseys be justified?

I was a in Paris a few weeks back and popped into the Adidas store and saw a football top that I wanted. It was priced at 80€. Thinking that must be typical Paris over-pricing I didn't buy it.

Fast forward to 2 weeks back. I saw it for sale here in El Corte Inglés. 80€.

This time I bought it. BUT, looking at the prices of these things I can't help but believe that there is manufacturer collusion in this industry.

So, my question is: Are these things worth the money or is the price a fair one?
 
The manufacturers will justify the price by telling you about the high technology fibres, probably featuring the word 'turbo' in the name, the science in the development and so on. They won't mention the sweat shop factories they still use, nor will they tell you the markup.

Since you paid the €80, they'll feel justified in charging it.
 
And the situation is getting worse.

course they are not justifiable but football fans are well not quite with it lol
 
the last shirt i bought was from a site called shirt9 or something? not too sure on the authenticity but the quality was spot on and all for less than $30
 
only football top I bought was a 2 season old lazio one which cost me a £10 in a sale and that was only to play football in.
 
In a word. NO. There needs to be some sort of revolution against the price of replica shirts.

I'm an adult. I can chose to buy one. I can chose to buy last seasons in the sale to wear at my weekly training sessions.

Its parents that feel the pressure. A child will want to support their team and will want to wear the latest shirt. (i know this opens up another bag of arguments about spoilt kids).

I would not be against paying £50 if the shirt lasted 3 or 4 years but lately the trend has been for a single season which is disgusting.

Until there is a restriction on the money that clubs payout, eg; wages then costs to the supporter will continue to rise.

I like the blue one so thats all that matters really, the white one to me just looks like a polo top with a english logo stitched on.
 
I once read on a fansite that it costs puma around £7 (going back a couple of seasons) to make a adults cov city top, that top was then sold on to us cov fans for £39.99.

Since then the price has dropped by a fiver but it just shows that companies know that as fans we will buy our team colours despite the price. This has been backed up by the fact that cov actually sold out certain sizes of last seasons kit before easter.
 
hmmmm.... cannot comment on footy shirts, but bought an England top when at Twickers last.. £50... I thought steep, but still bought one... am sure the sponsors need to recoup their investment somewhere.........


All gone a bit bonkers in sporting world..
 
Yes it is justified - its supply and demand!

Aside from essentials like fuel and basic foodstuffs then anything considered a luxury is and should be priced according to demand. The basic principal of business is to sell for the highest price you can. If people thought they were too much and didn't buy, then the price would come down. While many people are happy to pay such prices then its fine.
 
At about 50 quid for a fairly crappy item of clothing I'd say no when compared to something like a North face or Berghaus mid layer or a half decent active jacket for the same price.

Then I compare it to some flimsy item my wife might buy for twice the price and I start to wonder ?

Cambsno is right. It's supply and demand.

The item itself is worth sweet FA but they're priced based on what people are willing to pay.

£50 for a T-shirt, you 'avin a laugh. Call me a tight git, but I have t-shirts that if they were kids, would have moved out by now and they cost me a fiver. She won't let me wear them in public, but I still have them :-)
 
All these people saying what a rip off it is.....and then paying it. Duh :P
 
The only shirts I seem to buy are cheap foreign ones (usually) I have Poland, Croatia, Russia, Denmark, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Japan and Korea.
The great thing about these is they don't really go out of season, people are more concerned with the fact I own these types of shirts than what year they were worn by the actual team, I do intend to keep purchasing them cheap they use the same materials really and I can get reasonable mileage out of them.

I bought this years Germany shirt for £50. Well I got the full kit for around £80
Just to annoy all the Spanish/England fans on my holiday - Not for any other reason really. It's not that I support Germany, I'm just a football fan, yes I have teams and players above others but it's all for entertainment and maybe a cheeky bet now and again.

The only thing I would be concerned about is the way it widens the gap between lower leagues, I can buy a local shirt for much less than say a Man Utd shirt simply because of the badge. The team doing better (With more money more talent already) Is then gaining profit because of their shirt/ticket costs. It's a little unfair to the little local team in my opinion.
 
just heard an advert for Sports Direct on the radio offering adult england shirts for £14.99 and kids for £11.99.. offer ends Monday! Never heard of them being that low before, i bet they'll shift thousands this weekend.
 
They want to shift them before England's first game looks like!
 
or maybe when Ashley Young bangs a hat-trick in against the frogs they can slam the price up to £50 again :suspect:
 
The only team shirt I've ever bought was an official Scotland Rugby one.

It was £2 from Primark :lol:
 
I remember back in the 80s when most goal keepers just wore green, the manufacture of Evertons kit at the time wanted Neville Southall to wear something a bit snazzy so they could sell it for more money. Same Jersey costing the same to produce but because it was coloured they could jack the price up, he refused to go along with it and insisted on sticking to green, top man. and this was the 80s when they wasn't even that expensive compared to these days
 
The thing I notice from these replica shirts (especially the ones kids wear) is the amount of wear they get from them so I would have thought that a shirt that they play, fight, run, sleep and eat in is great value for the £40 ish you pay. Some of the kids never seem to have them off their backs!

Acually, that is a very good point. They do last.
 
Yeah I don't mind buying my wife her man Utd top as she can fit in a kids size so its cheaper LOL
 
if people pay it they'll keep charging it.
haven't bought a replica top since 99.
what annoys me is football boots, or more specifically all the nasty plastic ones about. £100+ for a pair of cheap, nasty, split after a kickabout ones.
