can the 50d take HDR photos?

No - not sure that any camera can (I could be wrong)

You can bracket exposures - so you take one so many under, one correct and one some over. You'll still need to merge them with a HDR program or PS.

A number of compacts can (and of course the iPhone 4 with the upgrade), but when it comes to in camera HDR for a DSLR I think that you are right.

Basically it's down to using AE Bracketing and then merge in PS or another PP programme, which at least gives you more control over the process.
 
thats what i was thinking, i have a look through the manual and couldnt see anything really, but i though i would ask on here, as you never know :)

i have photoshop cs2

any easy to use free programs for doing this please?

The new line of Sony D-SLTs (new type of D-SLRs) A33 and A55 have in built HDR capabilities as well as sweep panorama. Bit too fancy for my liking, but the modes are there if you want them...

for peeps who don't have cs2 i found this free HDR prog the other day:

the website is a useful HDR resource but i haven't used the software much
so can't vouch 4 it.

ofcourse you can also use layers and masks in any graphics software that supports them to combine multiple exposures.

i also think its easier to get useable results out of photomatix than photoshop if you are in a hurry. just MHO though.
 
Just out of interest - when did the word HDR get an auto hyperlink?! I never put that there! Are there any other keywords that do this? Guessing it's paid for advertising?

I can rrecommend HDRtist http://www.ohanaware.com/hdrtist/

Afraid it's MAC only, but is so easy to use;
1) drag and drop one or more exposures (the more the better)
2) drag the slider to the left for no effect, to the right for over cooking and see the effect dynamically
3) save the file

It really is that easy!

how much under and over do i need to have on the 50d in the viewfinder i can see from -2---0---+2

I used the same yesterday to do some HDR .. I rarely do it but was testing a Sigma 12-24mm and thought it would be a bit of a change.
