Hi folks,

Knowing nothing about filters I was hoping someone could recommend me a decent 9 or 10 stop filter and also a good polarising filter.

Regards

Scott

Budget?

.. there's good quality, and there's good quality.. ;)

I don't know how much they cost mate at all. Budget for both between 100-200. If that's not enough I could probably stretch to more.

It'd also be handy to know what you're going to use it on with regards to lenses and filter systems (if any). :)

Sorry mate I don't have a filter kit but if that would be better then I might begin like that. Also not sure if the square ones that sit in front of lens would be better than screw on ones which I assume works on only one size of lens. The lenses I have now are the canon 100mm macro L and the sigma 50mm art.

I use a hoya pro 1 circular polariser, and an srb 10 stop.
I've been very happy with both

Just checked this out on ephotozine and the recommend a Hoya prond 1000 with it which also seems very reasonable. I'll research this too and decide. Anything else recommended will be checked out too.

For those lenses, I'd be inclined to stick with screw-in types but if you're going to be looking at starting landscape photography with a wider lens, then I'd definitely recommend investing in a slot-in filter system. I've learnt the hard way that it's best to buy good stuff the first time around too. Like the old saying goes; "buy cheap, buy twice". :)

For the best Polariser go with Hoya HD not their Pro range which from the name suggests better.
The HD range is more money but not much a 77mm cost me £58 about 3 months ago.
Never had a problem switching between my 100-400 & 16-35 really smooth to turn and goes nicely dark when used at proper angle to sun.
Very little to no vignette at the wide angle as well.
Comes in a nice screw case with ridges keeping it in place inside of this case when not on lens.
I have 2 genuine P series Cokin polarisers and would say they are the same in quality as each other.
The reason I bought this threaded 77mm was due to my new 100-400 mkii having a window in the lens hood you can open and shut allowing you to turn the polariser without taking the lens hood off.
Being so easy to switch it between the 100-400 & 16-35mm is great because the P series filter holder is very visable even on my aging 28-135 at 28mm so you can imagine it on the wider lens being little to no use really.

I have a Haida 10 stopper and a CPL both work great and are reasonably priced

Thanks guys excellent advice as usual. I'll let you know what I end up with.
