Can PM apply IPTC to images coming in a watched folder?

I know most of you guys ingest in to Photo Mechanic and apply IPTC on the ingest.

I ingest locked files in to Lightroom, edit and export to a watched folder in PM.

I can't see a way to apply IPTC to the images as they drop in to the watched folder in PM.

Anyone know if it can be done and if so how as it will save me 2 key strokes and a mouse click.

Thanks.

Any reason that you're pulling the files into LR first? I would have thought that it was more logical to ingest to PM and then send to edit.
Amongst other reasons, it means that LR has some metadata to catalogue.

With your workflow wouldn't you be better off captioning in LR and ignoring PM completely?

Not sure if you can do that

Could you not import into PM as said however, importing the IPTC on ingest then select Lightroom as your editor?

Why is it you're using Lightroom and PM - thought you'd use one or the other? I use LR on its own and I know a lot use PM and PS to edit.

Not necessarily (the one or the other part). After all you need some form of processor apart from PM, especially if you shoot RAW....although I know that part's not particularly relevant for sport.

You could certainly use LR by itself, although I find PM neater and more efficient for culling and captioning.

My own workflow is:

Injest to PM: first cull, rename, global caption:
Tfr to Lightroom: global edits (levels, WB etc), crop & second cull
Export to nested folder, IQ + sanity check in PM, local captions if required, then ftp.

Rob, as a thought, why not try:

Ingest locked files with PM, applying captions, metadata and file names.
As part of the ingest send the files straight to a Lightroom watched folder with auto import set up.

That basically fulfils your requirements above, but does it in reverse order!

'ang on a sec....

I've just looked at the Live Ingest template in PM5 and there's a tick box for 'Apply IPTC Stationary Pad to Photos' (Destination Processing dialogue box, right hand side).

Isn't that exactly what you're after?

I still think that you're doing it arse-about-face though and losing all of the benefits of Lightroom's cataloguing in the process! :D

What I tend to do is take photos as quick as I can of all the players at the start showing their nos and boots. I lock those, then lock any I want to look at in greater detail at half time or sooner if needed.

I then ingest those in to LR as I like the crop, straighten, sharpen tools in LR.

Then I just edit the ones I want to send in LR and export them, leaving the ones with the players so I can flip back to LR if needed for identification.

This way the only ones coming in to PM are the ones I want to send.

Thanks by the way for looking in to it.

Good idea but when PM is watching a folder e.g. 1st Half it is not Ingesting them so doesn't apply the IPTC.

I do like PM but I also like working with it, with just the ones I want to caption and edit.

So as I have it now the process is.

It watches a folder e.g. 1st half.

They pop in that folder as I export from LR.

Then

Ctrl+A (to select all)
Ctrl+ I (then click on Apply Stationary to selected)
Ctrl+M to rename

then click in I on the first photo and caption.

then Ctrl+N to Save and go to the next folder.

then Ctrl+U & click Send to FTP.

So def some room for thought and improvement as I know I can speed it up.

Maybe as I like LR as an editor I should look at Tobers' way of doing it (but then I wasted £95 on PM) & need to spend £25 to get the captioning tool.

Oh and I need to get better as a photographer well :gag:

Can you not apply the IPTC metadata as part of the import into Lightroom? Set it up beforehand as a preset and apply that during the import.

Good thinking batwoman. I will lookie and see..

That's what I do.

Here's a quick summary of what I do.

- set up the caption template in LR before the game and create several smart collections based on date image taken and star rating

- import one of two ways during a game. If its a goal/cele I lock the images i want and use a utility to copy only locked files to a folder and LR is watching this folder and auto imports them applying the captioning info (for speed - quicker than importing the whole memory card). Then every 20 mins or so I swap cards and import all files into LR using a template that apply a captioning data.

- I then give 1 star (hit the 1 key) for any image in want to send which puts these into a Selected smart folder.

- go through the Selected folder, crop, straighten and caption (use text expander for Mac to help) and then apply 2 stars (hit the 2 key) which puts them in the Ready to Export smart folder

- once ready to export got to the ready to export smart folder, Select All and export using an export preset.

- change star rating on a exported images to Exported (4 stars).

- transmit exported files using Transmit
