Yes
I ask as was thinking of taking camera out tonight, but as others will be using it not so sure. I find that you really need to know what your doing unlike say a p&s, or even my D700, unless there is a setting I have missed!

Just put it in full auto mode, that's what I did on holiday when giving it to people. Still got some nice images :)

It's the focus mode I think people will struggle with - multi or area? With multi it rarely puts the box on someones head.

I've noticed people who aren't used to the camera having issues with the focussing. I really wish fuji had put a face recognition routine in so when I hand the camera to other people I'll get a nice pic back. I've plenty of lovely pics of myself and my son marred by the focus being on the background.

Yes, anyone can use one in auto mode. They have to wait for the camera to focus but they would have to do that with a £40 P+S too wouldn't they. Only difference is that the P+S has a huge DoF I suppose.

Problem I find is the focus point seems to be randomly placed.

Family members have used my X100s, the rare times I'm included in a shot. Or ill hand it to someone to grab random pics while I'm using the dslr.

Almost always, no matter how I set it up for them, they'll be back at least once with "I think I did something wrong there!" , thankfully it'll just be they turned on the flash by accident, or macro mode, or knocked off the LCD. Surprisingly easy things to do, and no issue unless yiu don't know how to undo them.

People have often handed me a standard P&S and I have no idea how to use as I want to press more button than just the shutter

Oh I have done this - "Looks like your compact settings are all wrong, let me fix that right up for you ... there ... er, oh, it's worse now, sorry, I'm used to bigger cameras" *run away*
