Also the RTM version is a lot quicker than preview as the bug check code isn't there anymore...

As you have 4gb RAM go for 64bit.

It's not just about memory - your P4 processor will only support 32bit.

Go to the MS website and download the Windows 8 Upgrade assistant. It will tell you what you can and can't run on your machine.

My AMDx2 5200+ at 3ghz and 2Gig ram runs Windows 8 64bit no problems..

Unless mistaken I think the OP has already confirmed that the chip is not a P4 but actually a core 2 duo which is 64 bit compliant.
Worth noting though that your board is max'd out at 4gig RAM and 32 bit will only show approx 3.5GB RAM available so it's whether you think the extra 0.5GB is worth it given that you can't throw anymore RAM at the board to get the real benefit of 64 bit.

I didn't see that confirmed but then its a longish thread.

If so yes it would support 64bit.

Well I tried the 64 bit disc and an error message or sorts came up. I then went to 32 bit and it installed fine without issue-- well that was until it won't connect to the Internet. It seems it hasn't got a driver for the USB adaptor I have plugged in( 2wire USB wireless adaptor). I can't find the drivers for windows 8 to get it up and running. Can only find win 7 and vista drivers. I did run the assistant and the USB adaptor is in the comparable section. I would have thought that it would find the adaptor when I plugged it in like it did in XP but not so.

I downloaded the win 7 drivers from my new PC and transferred onto the old PC via a USB stick but they are sitting on the desktop and I'm now stuck as to my next move. Any ideas would be helpful.

Windows 8 recognises that there is a device there but it says the setup in incomplete. I can't see the drivers for the device for Win 8 just Win 7. Is it worth trying to get them to run as I transferred the zip folder onto the old PC desktop? If so how do I get them into the correct file to run?

Just get a Win 8 compatible wi-fi dongle. They are cheap enough. Or hook it up with an ethernet cable.
