I have a pre - AI 105mm f2.5 which works nicely on my D3200 despite advice on the internet including on some Nikon sites which state it can't be used.

it seems to work ok but it cannot report F info is that right?

I untend running it wide open at F2.5.

Probably not. Does the D7000 have an AI tab to pick up the aperture position? Even if it does, it won't know the actual aperture, just how many stops it is from wide open.

It will still stop down when you press the shutter though if you want to use it other than wide open.

I think it does feel the F doing a bit of testing its all good.

I own a D7000 and manual Nikon AI lenses so i guess i can answer this.
Yes you can use AI lenses on a D7000 with metering in A mode. There is a menu setting called Non-CPU lens data where you can add data for each lens (it's pretty easy) so the AI ring knows what the aperture is. You also get focus confirmation with the green dot on all focus points.

I use my old lenses on my D7000 all the time. The D7000 has an AI sensing tab, which is why you can use AI/AIS lenses (and why you cannot use pre-AI lenses - because the pre-AI lenses would damage the AI sensing tab).

Cameras like the D3200 can use pre-AI/AI/AIS lenses because it has no AI sensing tab at all. The advice out there is pretty clear.

Does the D7000 have a crop factor with non DX lenses? If so then maybe 105mm may be a bit long for at times? Seem to remember you having a 50mm which with the crop factor could be close to a good portrait lens?

It has a crop factor which changes field of view with whatever lens you put on the camera. That's precisely why I sold my 105mm f/2.5 - it was an awesome lens, but a tad too long on digital for me. I use a 50mm (albeit AF-D) for short portraits, and an 85mm for longer portraits.

Except when it's contradictory. I found information on a Nikon site saying pre AI on a D3200 could not be used, but after a lot of looking at the lens and body, I decided to attach a lens and press the shutter. Nothing broke and no bits fell out so I assumed it was ok!!

I found the 105 did work quite nice but as said above it turned out a bit long :-0
