Can I use extension tubes with a macro lens?

Yes you can not familiar with those tubes but as long as they have the electrical connection they will work fine

you can even stick a teleconverter on it with extension tubes to get even more magnification! I used to get close to 5:1 with my old D300 You start to lose a lot of light though.

Back in the days of film, the Canon FD 50mm Macro lens was supplied with it's own extension tube (25mm I think) since it was the only way you could achieve a 1:1 reproduction ratio.
Without the extension tube you could only achieve a 1.5:1 reproduction ratio.

Yes you can and those Kenko tubes are a quality set. I use tubes plus a Raynox DCR-250 connected to my Canon 100m macro lens when i want an insane amount of detail.

The only problem I can see is that, as you've found, you need extra extension to get closer. There is a limit here - to get closer than 1 focal length from the optical front of the lens (not physical - the difference depends on the lens design) you need a greater than infinite extension. In other words, 1 focal length = infinite extension, and that imposes a limit.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep my eye out on flea bay for a set.
Thanks for the link to the 'Show us your rig thread'. Lots of very useful info on set-ups there. Very inventive use of plastic milk bottles, Pringles tubes, duct tape and velcro :)
