There are lightning triggers you can get which will fire the camera when they detect a flash of light.

Prob outdoor off lighting , or i could be wrong , it is a good idea to have a remote flash for say .. a zoo shot or lighting a harsh shadow you want in frame too. remote flashes are not a must but come in handy at times. They do cost a bit extra , but I would get more creative first and use the sun or a lamp to bring out features in the subject, and remember the onboard flash can be adjusted .What is it that you are actually trying to achieve?

Pocket wizards work at a range of up to 1600 feet....but the minimum you need is two of them and the cheapest you'll get them from now is just under £300 a pair :bonk:
