Can I photographer the other team?

A friend has asked if I would take some pictures of her netball team during their next game. It's nothing serious; I just think they want some pictures of them playing.

It's probably in a leisure centre or Uni sports hall.
They are part of an amateur league and to my knowledge, the league is for over 18’s.

My question is if the other team can object?
There is no money involved and I’d be happy to let the other team have copies of any pictures. Any advise on the situation would be appreciated.

Can't see any problem here. Almost impossible to get shots without someone on the other team being in shot.
Centre management would be the only ones to tell you to stop.
Just go for it.
 
Shouldn't be a problem, just speak to the centre management beforehand and explain it's shots for the team and they are over 18.

Other problem is technical. You'll need some fast glass. Sports centres are usually darker than you think.
 
I doubt if it is anything to do with the centre management. Don't pussy foot around with all this political correctness malarkey, just get there and enjoy taking your shots.
 
Might be best if you get your friend to speak to the other team first and then get there permission. No problems if they don't object. or just delete any pics with anyone who does object

That's just trying to sort a problem that's not even there. Why ask... just take the photos for gawds sake.

Umm.. why not ask the other team? If Team A is playing Team B and Team A would like some photos taken during the match.. I assume Team A have a telephone number for the coach of Team B.. .

Not asking Team B in advance, when Team A already knows you'll be there doesn't really seem sporting.. you wouldn't want to distract Team B by being the unknown person with the long lens taking pictures of women.. would you?

It's only courtesy to ask. It doesn't cost anything.
 
I know it doesn't cost anything to ask... but there's just no need to ask. It's not being rude not asking!!

People still fart on trains eh! that's rude, but people don't ask. :)
 
It is being rude not asking.. particularly when you already have doubts about them giving permission (Neil is already hinting at reservations).

If it's amateur league netball then I foresee that this is a group of women playing a private game of netball in a private location (leisure centre of sporthall would be private property) in order to relax and have fun. I know that this is a world that thinks nothing of objectifying women and using cameras to do so.. but don't they have a reasonable expectation of privacy and a relaxed atmosphere. If you're a bloke planning on taking pictures of a private womens amateur sporting event then I think asking permission is the decent thing to do. Unless you don't respect them?

In a private venue the photographer has no right to photograph.


BTW, are you equating Neil's photographic skills with a fart on a train?

100% agree :thumbs:. Courtesy is absolutely the way forwards, they might even want some pics themselves.
 
I've photographed a netball team before (over 18's) for a friend, and all I did was turn up, wandered over to the captain of the other team, and just politely asked. They said "sure, but only if you get my good side!". And we ended up having a quite good evening, it was relaxed and it made the job in hand sooo much easier! A real bonus is that we had a real laugh, I even made a few bob out of it through the other team buying copies!
 
The only problem you will face is if the leisure centre ban photography (like my local one do). If that's the case, you will have to talk to the centre manager or you will be trespassing if you take any photographs.
 
Always good to ask just to be sure :) costs nothing to ask :)

Check the leisure center allows photography. there hall there rules. nothing more embarresing than being chucked out I imagine.. then ask the other team captain..explain what your doing and its doubtful; they would object.. If they did object then they would object even more if you did it without asking..

Exactly! if you didn't ask and they did object, put it this way... bad stuff could happen :suspect: Its more embarrasing to get your arse kicked by girls then be thrown out than to just get thrown out! ;)

Having shot amateur level sport in sports halls, thats pretty much sound advice Tony. If the two teams will be the only ones in the hall, and the opposing captain is happy for you to shoot, the centre manager will probably give you the ok anyway, unless they are particularly jobsworthy.
 
Thanks for all the comments, even the defence of my photography skills versus farts!

Considering the point about privacy and people being relaxed, I’ll ask my friend to check with the other team first, as well as all of her team mates! I doubt they will feel their privacy is being invaded though; I only have a bridge camera, so there won’t be any big lens in their faces.

As for the venue, I’ll see if they have any policy on photography.

My photography is in its infancy and I don’t have lots of equipment – yet!
Right now I’m just looking forward to having a subject to snap at and don’t want any financial reward (although extra beer tokens never goes a miss), or to upset anyone. The biggest opposition (or chance for money!) could be from my friend who is married to one of the girls!!

Exactly and why I said ask the centre management, telling them you've been asked by the teams to attend. Lets face it, the girls usually wear shortish skirts which fly every where during netball, so it's best to nip any hint of impropriety in the bud.

They lay most weekends, but I think the current date we're looking at is the 10th Oct.
I'll certainly post a few pics if I do it.
 
what do sports photographers do when covering a game...they cant clone out anyone who might object
i would ask the other team if anyone is into photography and send them a disc with the shots on...they could always sell them...:D
