Hi All Macro photographers

I was hoping that some of you out there may be able to help me. When starting out in my photography I got a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM I have enjoyed doing plenty of portraits and photographs of flowers and insects etc.

viewing the inspirational macro shot which appear on here, I now find myself wanting to explore some "closer" photography. (e.g more detail insect shots or flowers) I was wondering if there was anything I can buy to get a bit more magnification out of the lens, extender and tubes etc. ?? or would I need to get a whole new set up?

(I understand that a lot of the really close up detailed shots I see on here use very specific equipment)

Many thanks in advance :help:

A set of Kenko extension tubes here will be just the business for you. A word of caution though, by using these you cut down on the light - A flash really is a must to get the best out of this type of macro photography.

Alternatively there are some close up filters you can add to the front of your lens, such as a raynox DCR250. Link here. This gives a 10x magnification I think. These are good too and cheaper too.

Don't forget as well that the ability to crop a shot comes into it as well. A well focused shot can be cropped to look even bigger. But if it's not bang in to start with, you're wasting your time with cropping.

Another final thing from me - I hope you don't get insulted by this - But do you know how to use the macro lens for macro work? I only ask this as I have the same lens and I didn't realise how to use it for months. I couldn't get macro half as close as others with the same lens :bonk: Then I asked some questions and I realised that I hadn't been using it properly!! No wonder my macro work was so crap for a while!!

Thanks sara

For the advice on the raynox DCR250 and extension tubes just looking at them now. I think I am using it properly but have never really been shown as I'm the only one in my group of photography friends who is into macro, so any pointer and tips would be welcome. I may be missing something totally :)

I have a set of kenko, they are fantastic!

i done a quick test here when I first got them, might be interesting for you. If you would like me to test they out on anything let me know via PM

here are a few links I posted using the kenko on 60mm macro. first link is best to show comparision with normal macro and then with the tubes on.

I've got the Canon 100mm macro as well, and a set of kenko tubes for the really small stuff. If you want I could take some shots with just the lens, and a few combinations of tubes to see what effect they have?

Chris

Thanks robbo, chris - thats a great help.

Thanks for the offer chris. I have a 40d (I notice you have a 50d) and it would be great if I could see some shots of something that shows what difference the tubes made to the lens in terms of magnification

thank you

Sorry Robbo, yes your first link did work thank you showed the difference really well. and your other posts showed the variety I could get from it which is great. But as Chris offered to show me a couple of shots with the set up which would be the same lens same extension and a 50d instead of my 40d I thought it would help me as the set up is so like mine. I'm sure it won't make much difference to what you showed though. but as the offer was there.......

Thank you though for your post. Have start to look for some good prices for them
