Can I have a faster Sync speed?

Yes
Hi all, I have the interfit 150 2 light home studio kit and a Cannon 550d. The sync speed I believe is 0/200. I have increased this slightly to 0/250 but above this I get the dark 'curtain' effect. I am trying to get some pics of my daughters on a space hopper but they are somewhat soft. I am using the kit lens (18-55 IS) and feel that it might be contributing (but only slightly) to the softness. Is there any way that I can set up to have a faster shutter speed?

Above shutter speeds of around 1/200 you need high speed sync. This is where the flash puts out a controlled series of flash pulses to prevent the dark curtain effect. As far as I know this can only be done with Speedlights that have HSS as an option.

With normal flash, ie your Interfits, the shutter must be at the x-sync speed, or longer, to record a full clean frame. But it makes no difference to the exposure and the flash duration is effectively your (fixed) shutter speed and that will be quite fast.

Unless your daughter is moving around quickly, the flash should freeze her, but it's quite possible that it's not. In which case there's nothing you can do about that, except take lots of pictures and then you'll probably get one where she is in mid-bounce and therefore more or less stationary so the image should be sharp.

I'd guess it's unlikely to be your lens. Again, if she's moving, it could be that she's not in focus. Use a higher f/number to ensure that's covered by depth of field.

There's an option if you sync with the new pocketwizards that may give you MUCH faster speed with no loss of frame or power. Like High Speed Sync but way more powerful.

Here's an article I wrote that goes into sync speed for shooting action images: Flash Sync Speed for Action

No, unfortunately there isn't.

Edit: looks like CNWPhoto's post has been removed. Think he was spamming for his website, and with duff info LOL
