Been using the search function and think I've worked out my settings for this evening. We're off to the rugby club (quelle surprise) for NYE and we have a band playing. Let me describe the scene:

Like a village hall but bits smaller (about 20ft by 40ft with bar in one corner). Fits about 100 people at a squeeze. The band plays in one corner with two spotlights on them and no other lights, there's christmas lights round the bar and on some of the walls.

Now with my 18-50mm f2.8 lens on my 40D, I would have thought I could use this indoors quite well.

Tv priority
f2.8
1/125
Spot metering
whack my ISO up to 800 or even 1600.

Does this sound about right to you? The light is not going to be great but I want to avoid using the flash really

TIA

mostly but I doubt you'll get to see much of 125th.

I'd go aperture priority and keep the lens wide open to protect your shutter speed. Get the ISO up as high as you can and then shoot away.

Not forgetting of course to get out from behind the camera tonight and enjoy the party! :D

I'd do exactly what Daz said. Shoot in AP Mode, increase ISO and keep the lens wide open to obtain the fastest shutter speed possible which will vary with the light in the room and the area you're shooting, but 125th does seems a bit optimistic.

Ah, okay, that's why I wanted to check, I've read a few posts about gigs and that's what some of them have said plus a link to somewhere but I supposed that's when they have all the lighting rigs up and everything.

And I'll definitely enjoy the party :D:D:D:D:D

You all have a good night as well and thanks for your advice. Will post some tomorrow
