Yesterday found me in Sheffield for the AMA [amateur martial association] British National Karate Championships. Doing my usual dual role of photographer for our club and supportive mum to 14yr old daughter Beth. She has been doing karate for less than 2 years and is a Green Belt [6th kyu - belts run from 10th kyu, white, through to 1st kyu, black and on into dan grades] but trains really hard with the higher graded students. At competitions there are two types of classes - kumite, which is free fighting, and Kata, which is a solo demonstration of fighting and defensive moves in sequences that have been practiced by martial artists in Japan for gawd knows how many centuries - its sounds a bit wussy, but when you see an adult male do this, its pretty frightening!

So, thats the explaination, here is the proud mum bit - Beth took Gold in her Kata category, Junior mixed [under 16] 4th kyu and below. So, beloved spawn is now officially a British Champion!! :woot: :woot: She has won at smaller competitions but this is her first major tournament title and is the first big rung on the ladder to greater things. So feeling a bit proud of the brat today :D

Here she is collecting her trophy from the judges. Apologies for the noisy picture, D200 on ISO800 requires some serious NR that I havent had chance to do yet, got some 500 pics to go through sometime this week :bonk:

Brilliant news!

Even the judges (?) have smiles on their faces :D

Fantastic  You have every right to be a proud mum! Well done to Beth!

Thats great news.

Is it just me, but is she wearing a red belt and not a green one? (or is that the green one I can just see, the one that looks blue.)... you are using a Nikon though so might be the camera :P hehe

congrats to both of you

(not a bad pic either!)

 cheeky! No, a bit like boxing, in competition, you have red versus blue regardless of their graded level and as they progress through rounds they often have to change between the two so you see them all walking round wearing both and removing one when they are told what colour they will be in that round. The problem is of course that there is always a raft of red and blue belts left behind at the end of the day :bonk: Anyway, her reward from me for winning was a new set of competition belts that will be embroidered with her name so they dont get mixed up with everyone elses ;)

thnakyou everyone, its a good feeling and even better, SHE is not satisfied, she wants to do much better in the fighting categories and compete in the open kata groups against the higher grades...so more taxi duties ferrying her to training for me then :help:

Congrats all round Yvonne

Always a proud moment when a child gets any prize-let alone gold.

Rah rah rah

Great to have an obliging suit to define her profile!

Nice one Yvonne and congrats to Beth, you must be very proud!

Well done, you must be so proud! I'm a green belt (just graded!) but i'm a fair bit older than your lass:whistling: , and the thought off competeting terrifies me, so hats of to her:clap::clap::clap:

Be great to see some more action shots by the way!!

Will do, when I have had chance to process them, just got in from work and got to head back there in 20 minutes :bonk: We have a few adult students who feel the same as you, I think its the kids that have that 'no fear' thing for the competitions, not sure I could do it!

Thankyou again guys, I have calmed down a bit now you will glad to know

Exciting! :) Well done to your daughter. I've wanted to pick up some form of martial arts. Was thinking of Aikido, but can't seem to get my arse in gear for 10am on Sunday mornings.

Congratulations to both of you. And a good picture to go with it.
