can different sensors affect image sharpness?

The reason why i ask is that moving from my 400D to the 50D i am finding my images to be alot sharper straight out of the camera:), so much so that i have been very impressed.

I am using the same lens at roughly the same settings. (i.e. aperture, and mounted on a tripod)

I though the sharpness was a result of the lens, does the sensor or even the processor i.e digic 4 in this case bring out better details? :thinking:

Yes, definately. The AA filter makes a huge difference to sharpness, much more so than (for example) stopping down from say f/2.8 to f/4

Make sure you evaluate sharpness with all sharpening Off, and in raw.
 
I did evaluate them in RAW and recent shots have had no need for sharpening where as on the 400D most needed sharpening.
I didn't realise that before i bought the camera and to say its an added bonus is just :thumbs:
 
Another possible reason is that the AF on the 400D needs some calibration...
 
The AA filter, the sensor, the lens, and the photographer, ALL affect the sharpness.

There are a LOT of variables.
 
the 400D has produced some very sharp images but the 50D just seems sharper.

I owned a 400D for 2 years. I was always struggling to obtain a sharp image. I refused to blame the camera ( a poor workman etc, etc, ) I've bought and sold several lenses in an attempt to improve the sharpness. I was always sharpening and over sharpening in an attempt to obtain a decent image.
I recently bought a 50D - end of problem! Every shot is sharp, it's easy !!
I'm afraid that my 400D must have been a poor copy. There is the consolation that in attempting to improve with the 400D, I learned a lot! but I wonder how many others have poor copies and are wondering why they can't get good photos.

Ive started getting problems with sharpness from my 400D!
It used to be fine, but recently every image is just too soft!

How is this done?
