Can anyone repair this image please.

This picture and uniform pretty much confirm it would have been the Bantu or Boer war. ( 1834 )

From my sketchy memory the Pith Helmet was last used in that war and by the first world war it had been replaced by the standard tin hat.

I'm a member of a number of war record sites, any idea what his name may be.

That would include your Grandfather, Great grandfather and if you know it your Great Great Grandfather.

If you let me know their names by pm if you want to I'll see if I can find out anything.

As for picture quality, he obviuosly moved his feet, and chances are hidden out of sight is an armature he would have been resting on.

No the pith helmet was worn long after 1834, it was still in common use at the time of the Zulu wars 1879 and used after that in hot climates.

The pith helmet used in the Zulu wars was a much slimmer thing though wan't it - pretty much identical in shape to the current coppers helmet except in white?

It varies with regiment a bit, the slightly smaller newer ones were used by the South Wales Borderers, but some other regiments still used the older type, indeed my grandfather (RAF) was issued with the old type in Africa and the middle east in WW2, we still have it in the family.

We need a pic with you wearing that then Wayne! :D

Some fantastic work here guys

really eye opening what can be done with some time and effort and of course plenty of skill too

As mentioned by others, fantastic results shown here! I have a couple of old tatty pictures my mother gave me that i think I'll go practice on. About time I started to learn how to use the copy of PSE I bought.

A couple of hours spent on it, still not perfect though, that floor pattern was a killer.

As this is on two pages for me I did a side by side comparison - you can seem the quality of the work in the 'repair' - I'm truly impressed.

It looks OK in B&W Mark. I used to do this work for a major lab though, and they were sticklers for retaining the original tone/colour of the image - the accent being on restore to original as much as possible rather than altering the image in any way.

The weak point of these jobs is the scanning - sometimes you get areas of purple on a mono scan, due usually due to degradation of the emulsion and the scanning light just highlighted the problem. In those cases it was easiest just to convert to B&W to lose the cast and save a whole load of work.
