Hello everbody!

I am thinking to start my BTEC HND in Photography course, which is 2 years program. Does anyone study, or completed the course?

I have basic knowledge in Photography and I see different opinions on whether to study, or not. Some say it's meaningless, others say it's good.

At this time I am enrolled in the course, which will be in Dublin. It starts in Sept. 2013.

Not completely sure whether to learn as I am almost 30 years old.

Don't want to waste my time and money, especially, if the course is not practical. I want to do a creative pictures in the future. Can someone who has the experience in the course share their opinion, please?

Thank you!!!!!

The answer is right there in your question!

Some say its worthless, others that its really useful.

What do you want to get out of it? Have you read the syllabus and compared it to your needs?

That's all that you need to consider, everyone's needs are different, it'd be useless to me, but frankly that means nothing to you.

Thank you, Phil!

I want to shoot weddings, love stories, portraits, nature, and kids. I want to learn processing of pictures to the art level, know more about working with lights.

How much have you tried to go out and learn by yourself? If you have, are you at a brick wall? I image the first semester will teach you the basics, but if you know it, surely a waste of time and money.

Will the syllabus be useful to you? Is it what you want to learn? That I guess will answer your question.

Learning and education should be about learning because you want to learn and having a passion and lust for the subject matter. To learn to do something, just to make money will be ok, but the lack of 'umph' and passion will show in your photos. This applies to all disciplines and industries. I see it all the time! The people who 'love' their jobs and have a real passion are streets ahead of anyone else! Regardsless of how good they are! Even if they are not as good technically, you always want the guy with the passion and drive!!! - he/she will be the one that goes the extra mile!

If you are asking whether you should do it or not, that's your call! Its your life!!! your decision. The fact that you are asking suggest you don't know what you want!

If you are asking whether Dublin is a good place to study that course - Then I hope someone can advise you better.

If you are asking whether the BTEC route is better then a job where you work your way up and gain experience/knowledge on the way then again I hope someone in the industry can advise you better! Personally, when I recruit I look at experience and potential!

Hope that helps!!!!

you can learn a ton from bhphotography channel on youtube, and others. How much is course and what does it provide..

Search for posts from Pookeyhead on this subject, or drop him a PM.

He's a college tutor and knows his stuff

Agree with Phil.

If I was 16 then yes, I would probably so something like this to learn basics. However, as a 'grown up' I would say no. I learnt everything myself. I do lack the technical knowledge, some of the conversations on here baffle me but do understand quite a bit and at the end of the day its all about the end product.
