I'm after a netbook , primarily to use for web browsing and microsoft office use

its going to be took to college once a week so small and light is a must

I've had a very quick look and the samsung n150 seems to get good reviews

does anyone have any netbook experience ? anything to avoid / look for ?

my budget is £300 absolute max

thanks

Haven't got a recommendation but remember seeing 3 budget netbooks (un)scientifically tested on The Gadget Show last week. Included in the 3 was the samsung n150.

We have just got 2 HP 210 mini's I have been really impressed with them, my eldest daughter uses hers for school plus all the normal things that teenagers do and it has been no problems at all, I reckon that we get 6 hrs plus out of a battery, although I have never properly timed it. It runs windows 7 starter. We got ours from tescos direct for £250 plus double club card points. . 250 gig hard drive plus 1 gig of ram .

I got a samsung N130 from Argos ebay for about £150 a few months back. Great netbook with about 4-5 hours battery life. I find it great when traveling.

Going on my experience with this netbook I would recommend Samsung.

Hiya,

I have an Asus Eee PC and it is brilliant! I have had it for over a year now, with no problems.

It is used all the time, and it has an 8 hour battery life and great keyboard, which is what I require as a touch typist.

It is very comfortable to use and is very lightweight.

My friend recently bought a Sumsung (not sure what model) and it has a 14 hour battery life, so they are obviously improving on that aspect since I bought mine.

Good luck with your search. Best bet would be to go to some of the local retailers and check them out and see what suits you, a bit like buying a camera. Then go online and see if you can get a bargain.

Cheers

Dawn :)

thanks for the replies

there's loads to go at , the samsung look good though

The samsung is a bit slow even with the same procesor as the asus. Asus is only £200. A friend has a samsung and it seems to struggle with doing more than one thing at once. It's a shame really as samsungs are normally really good. In the unscientific gadget show test it was the only one that couldn't open any of the video content and play it for the crash test. Think the asus had several videos going at once and so did the other one.

just been thinking more about this and how do you reformat a netbook when theres no cd drive ?

what do they put the OS on ?

probably a daft question ........

Compaq Mini 311c - nice 11.6" screen; plays games; HDMI out; great little beast.... chuck a 2Gb module in it if you want to play HDMI or install Win 7....

I've got a Dell that I am trying to sell (but not got enought posts yet lol)

It's a good little bit of kit that I got as a stopgap. It's only got a 1.66Ghz processor and 1Gb of RAM but handles Office 2003 fine enough. As for the CD drive, externals are cheap enough these days. I just had an DVD writer from one of my previous laptops and got a caddy off ebay for a few quid. Battery life stands at about 6-8 hours depending on use.

They are handy to have and I nearly took it to Knockhill today to view my pics on but I forgot to charge it up lol.

looks good value ! do you have this model yourself ?

My daughter just bought one a few weeks ago, and I fitted the extra 2Gb and installed Win 7 on it..... great little thing; I'll probably have one myself at some point. The larger screen makes a huge difference.

There's also a forum for them. Apparently you can do all sorts of software overclocking, etc.

cheers mate

Forgot to say.... if you get one and want the memory upgrade, it's DDR3 not DDR2. I nearly made the fatal mistake of ordering DDR2 on the assumption that's what would be in it.... nearly, but not quite.... :D

thanks

how easy is the upgrade to fit ?

does it take it to 2gb from 1gb ?

As easy as taking out one screw on the underside then snapping the module in and replacing the screw - about 30 seconds total.

There is only 1 memory slot free, and the 1Gb is built into the motherboard, so you can fit either a 1Gb or 2Gb DDR3 module in it to give you a total of 2Gb or 3Gb. I found there wan't enough price difference between the two to make buying the 1Gb worthwhile.

thanks for that :)

Usually a hidden partition on the hard drive. If you look in the user guide it usually says to hold a key down when booting such as F11 and it goes to a recovery screen.

You can also install Windows from a USB flash drive, or get a little external DVD writer - works from USB only so no pesky mains cables to bother with.

Depending on the built in restore is fine, but if your boot sector gets corrupted or your hard drive fails you're back to one of the above options anyway....

I've had a couple of Asus EEE's in the past. Now I have an Asus 1005ha and it works great. I run Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it.
Battery life is very good - between 5-7 hours.
I would recommend Asus and Samsung netbooks.

Most netbooks have a hidden partition to reinstall the OS. You can also install from a USB flash drive.

Looks like pretty standard fare - 10.1" screen, 1Gb, etc. Best find out if the 1Gb is upgradable though, as not all of them are..... gets half decent reviews though. I'd definitely dump the woeful Win 7 starter for either Ubuntu/Win XP or upgrade the memory and get Win 7 Premium.

Hi,

I have a Samsung N220 which I

It's used for browsing the internet and I also have Office 2007 loaded (mostly use PPT and Word).

Also I download all my photos onto it while I'm away from home but I only edit them in Picasa - I'm not sure it would appreciate having PSE running!

Can't believe how I coped without it! The battery life is very good - maybe 8 hours.

It's memory is upgradable apparently , I like the look of the one in the link you posted but its out of my budget

whats the score with win 7 starter ? is it much different from win 7 ?

thanks for your help

Decent review here of Win 7 Starter - I've had a couple of netbooks (to fix) with it on them, and I couldn't believe you can't even change the desktop background!

On saying that, if it's purely for Internet and MS Office apps, it'll do the job.... you always go looking for things only to find they just aren't available about 30 minutes later.... :)

Just to update the thread ....

I'm now sorted as I managed to get hold of a samsung NC10 for the right money

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies
