I am looking to get some pictures of a friends son's communion printed and i was looking for something a but better quality than the high street. Any advice appreciated.

Loxley in Glasgow is good - but they're about to move to a new premises, so service may be slow for a week or two...

costco but you need to be a member and pick them up at a store
not too much help i guess but their quality is pretty good on snaps

Sams photolab -you'll have to google it, there in Scotland haven't used them so perhaps someone else will know if they are OK

I use DS Colour labs and found them to be good, they're based in Manchester.

Used DS Colour Labs recently for the first (and second) time. Cheap print prices and very good quality on heavy photopaper. Really well packaged too, which explains why P&P is a bit higher than some - £4.95 for Recorded (but I upgraded to guaranteed next day £7.50 courier service which seems cheap in comparison).

Only possible downside is they don't offer a hosting service so if you later want more copies of the same images you have to re-upload.

define better quality - most places print on the same paper using the same machines so the actual quality is pretty much the same.

loxley, DSCL, photobox all use fuji frontiers but charge differently.

DS Colour labs in Manchester are superb on quality and delivery. Ordered a number of times ususaly 16x12" photos and never had a problem at all. Would highly recommend.

Try snapfish, if you get your internet from Virgin media you can get 25 free prints every month, if not look at your flickr homepage and on the bottom right you will see codes for 50% off every snapfish item and 50 free prints, service is good and prints are done to a good standard.

Check it out.

I also use snapfish through my virgin account and have had no problems at all with them.
25 free prints a month is not to be sniffed at.

I know someone who used photobox to print his coffe table book and it doesn't look convincing... so does that mean loxley and dscl prints will be the same then?

Photobox are are not in the same league as DSCL!

I have tried quite a few ranging from pro to high street.

If it is just standard sizes you are after i would highly reccommend Aldi photo. Everytime i have used them, they have produced high quality and the colour is exactly the same as on my screen. Low cost, top quality Fuji paper and very fast turn around. http://www.aldiphotos.co.uk/

If you are after pro stuff, i use http://www.proprintstudio.com/ Although they are quite expensive.

Argh!

That's like saying that everyone who uses a D3 will get the same results!

There are a huge range of setting you can adjust on the printers - and also how the files are prepped for printing.

Then, the person who runs the work - and their input!

Then - Fuji make a range of papers - Chrystal Archive as the base product - DPII for pro work - and so on.....

Some will be very much the same - as the defaults on the printers are designed for average work - but if you find someone who knows how to get the best you might find a big difference!

I've had huge consistency problems with photobox. I had an A4 print printed (amongst other prints) a year ago which I was very happy with. I tryed to get the same jpeg file printed again in the same size six months later and they couldn't duplicate the results. They offered to reprint the print two further times, but the results were terrible (washed out colours and pale). The same image file was used on both orders, so the consistency problem must have been on their end.

I have placed around 10-15 orders with Sams and cannot recommend them highly enough. One day I sent the order through at 9am and got them next day!!! Quick to respond to queries and great quality.
