Yes
I am hoping to use this with a 400d gripped and sigma 105 macro.

Assuming that you want a mini-tripod for getting up close, you can't go wrong with this Giottos You'll have to buy the ball head (or whatever head suits your purposes - it can be also used on a full height tripod) but this is a sturdy and quality tripod. Someone wrote a review of it on this forum a couple of months ago if you care to search.

When i use a tripod for macro (which is not very often) i use a Manfrotto 190CXPro which you can get nice and low to the ground and it has a centre coloum you can rotate through 90 deg.

I was under the impression that you really needed a tripod for most macro work. Is this not the case?

I hardly ever use a tripod for macro, but it depends.

If it's a set up shot, maybe on a table top, then yes a tripod is much easier.

But in the field, tripods are a right pain. I stalk about with a ring flash.

As hoppy says tripod for set-up shots or sometimes flowers but most of the time hand-held - if your trying to catch a bug by the time you've finished faffing with a tripod it'll be long gone :)
