Can anyone recommend a source for hoods for Canon lenses?

I'm looking to get hoods for my Canon 17-85 and 100-300 lenses. E-bay seems awash with cheap, typically Chinese copies. Are any of these any good? Or should I splash out the seeming;y ridiculous sums that Canon wants?

Thanks for any recommendations.

I got 2 lens hoods off the bay. Perfect fit, spot on and happy to pay £6 ish. I used 2 seperate Chinese sellers, arrived in about 2 weeks and boxed.

I'm afraid it's just pot luck on eBay for this kind of thing. The fit and finish may be really quite good or absolutely awful. The only consistent thing is that they're much cheaper than the genuine Canon one.

However... ask yourself how many of these are you likely to buy? And providing you don't lose it, how many years before you wear it out?

I go with the Canon ones. I agree the prices are a rip off but you do know it's been designed for a particular lens and it's going to fit well.

You can sometimes pick up a 2nd hand one, so if your not in a rush, might be worth just watching and waiting.

If you do decide to go down the "copy" route, try to ensure the inside of the hoods are a matt finish - the genuine ones are a kind of flock lined finish, so you don't get any reflection inside the hood !!

Hope this helps

I was lucky with original 2nd hand ones so far (one cost only £1). To be honest Canon ones seem as easy to break. They are only plastic, just like HK ones. I don't have a clue if HK ones have the velvet lining on the inner side (quite important to minimise reflections) but you could always ask the seller.

The one I sold on here last time was bought from ebay and it did have the velvet lining inside.

My most recent lens hood purchase was for my 85/1.8. I had bought a Marumi hood (no felt) for £8.80 from 7dayshop but I ony used it a few times before the tiny plastic tabs snapped off, rendering it useless - unless I taped it to the lens. I've just replaced it with an original Canon hood, which is felt lined, and cost £16.89 delivered from Digital Rev on eBay.

Time will tell whether or not it lasts any longer than the copy but compared to the cost of the lens, the camera, and my total spend on gear, an extra £8 is not going to break the bank.

Have a look in LCE if you have one near by, they sometimes have a load in. The one in lincoln charged a tenner for a 10-22 & 70-300 hood both genuine canon.

EW-73B Fits 17-85mm Genuine £24inc Copy with flocking inside £18inc. Not HK

I was just about to link to that site! I made myself a nice petal hood for my 100mm macro a few weeks ago!
