Can anyone recommend a photography course?

Maybe not quite exactly what you're looking for, but you could try picking up some podcasts on the subject. The only one I really know of, however, is Tips From the Top Floor. There are others, I'm sure.

Did it three years ago and look at the trouble it got me in! ;)

Can't stop and now have my own business! lol

Thank you for replys - will check it out.

People really are friendly here...! Nothing to be scared about!!

To be honest I didn't but I've been taking pics since I was 4 which is a very very long time ago :)

It was good to go back to basics though and I really needed help getting to grips with the PP basics and that's where I really DID gain a lot. With the right basics installed I'm now reasonably proficient with CS3.

Was also very good to have to complete little projects along the way. There are only two compulsory bits, one multiple choice paper and a final panel but the weekly voluntary ones are excellent to keep you thinking.

Subscribe to PT4U and learn a lot from there. See the link in my signiture. Not a course, but a good learning source for portrait, weddings, strobes, PP, and now they have introduced some Andy Rouse vids for Nature.

I am currently finishing my GCSE in photography and found it pretty good, covers all the basics, you may already know most of the stuff but the assignments are great. They take you out of your comfort zone, tackling subjects you normally wouldn't. Mine was £99 1 night a week for a year.

There's always the NCFE level 1, 2 & 3 to consider.....

just about completed year one (sept - may, 1 eve per week 6.30-9.30) at local college - it has been brilliant!!!! I've learned loads, met great people, and really been taken out of my comfort zone & been challenged with the photographs I've taken.

about £230 ish per year, and you get a qualification at the end of it - unless you're unemployed and take it as a 'R2R course' and then its a tenner :)

Like Maria I've done the NCFE level 1. Unfortunately the college didn't run the L2 or L3 due to funding issues, so I went to another college and did Advanced Digital Management (or something). Planning to start the AS level in September and complete an A2 the year after that. It's around 3 hours a night, once a week and assesment is usually via a project which will take up a little more time.

I can heartily reccommend the evening classes at college over home learning.
- Interactive training - you ask a question, they reply instantly.
- Use of college facilities - The studio, the library and the computers as well as the printer for nice big cheap prints. Usually, there's a cheap shop for mountboard, photographic paper etc.
- Being a student! Gives you (usually) a student card which = big software discounts on things like Windows7, Photoshop & Lightroom.
- Social Aspect. This is the killer for me. It's nice to share your hobby with others who do the same thing. Getting tips for where to go locally to take photos, going on the occasional day out etc etc. Also, with the mix of people at the course, you're likely to have all sorts of levels of experience. Experts in computers after looking to their photographic skills, expert togs looking to bone up on computer skills etc.. Some people only do these courses for the social aspect, and are vastly over-qualified. In some cases, more qualified than the instructor!

Have a look at your local college prospectus and see what they offer. I guarantee you'll have a good time.

Ian.

Ian.

I think that's you Ian!! :D

I totally agree with Ian. I'm just finishing the course with Ian and it's been a great learning curve. Some weeks you'll learn loads, others you'll be going over old ground you may already know, but I've found the best part of the course is meeting other like-minded people who are into photography. You can get great input this way and it's a laugh too!
Make the most out of your local college and milk the student card for all it's worth!!
