Can any of our resident experts do anything with this?

Not great, but bit better. Processing from original might help. The odd bit of cloning might bluff things too. Tough call.

Just had a quick go

Added extra width on the right, cloned out the rushes bottom left, colour boost, levels and sharpen

Cheers guys. I've had another go too. I still can't shift the shadow without it looking obvious.:|

Process:

  • Select shadows w/ quick selection tool

  • Slect->Modify->Feather (5 px)

  • Image->Adjust->Exposure (play with the gamma slider first, then the exposure slider) until you get something 'almost right'

  • Patch tool the edges to interpolate the pixels and eliminate the bright white line around the edges.

  • Some sharpening and softening in different areas to make the pixels look right

A higher resolution file would be better to start with.
more data = better retouching.

I've had a go, i did this in half an hour in front of the telly on my laptop and no wacom. But i think it may be possible, just needs a couple of hours work.

Basic process. Isolated dark area including hand and made into new layer. Adjusted curves/levels to match the rest of the fish.
Made a copy of the flattened psd and pasted the flat image on top of the original.
Used lighting effects filter to add sunlight sparkle into the shadowed areas to give the illusion that the fish is now in sunlight. Used clone, patch etc to clean up some of the more obvious areas (adding more sparkle to the gills, matching colour of scales with the lower area of the fish)
I would suggest it needs some more colour matching on the hand to match the guys right hand. As i said, bit of a crash job, but i do think it's possible.

ETA: I missed his arm too! DOH! But as said above, i higher res file and even a raw file to adjust the exposure some more would be great. Just changing the exposure isn't enough there do need to be more highlights to suggest full sun.

I do have a bigger file, but not a RAW.
I think that will look great. It will be resized to 500px for the webpage.
