Hi, I am going to start needing something like the CAMRANGER in my arsenal and was wondering has anyone found any good alternatives to the £400 price the CR sits in?

I once heard there were £30/40 alternatives? But can't find much online?
Any suggestions?

Ideally I want to be able to tether to an ipad or mac but also shoot the pics through like a radio receiver...

Any good options?? Only wireless option I can find £250+.... Looks like wired tether and settling for view options only at this rate...

What camera?
What features do you need?

What does "but also shoot the pics through like a radio receiver" mean?

Only thing I can see if that you want to use apple.

I’m guessing you’re thinking of this:

A few years back I got the alternative to cam ranger to try out remote wide angle wildlife photography. To be honest it was an utter failure. The time delay between what I was seeing on the screen and in real life was massively out. It meant when I triggered the camera because I liked what I saw on screen I wasnt able to capture that it was in the past. Totally useless for what I needed it for. I just ended up with radio triggers in the end as much and hoped for the best.

Depending on your camera dome manufacturers already have apps available to control the camera via a smart phone.

For iOS have a look at the Cascable app. WiFi or USB tethering for several camera models.

Yes I sen that, $40 to unlock the full app, but I guess it's probably better than spending $500 on a camranger!
have you used it? Any good? Latency?

Unfortunately my camera isn’t compatible so I can’t honestly tell you. looks fantastic for Canon mirrorless providing you stay in close range of your iPad. Check out some youtube reviews, the features look pretty extensive. Camranger is effective to 500 ft and runs a 5ghz connection so will be much faster than Cascable, but for the price, I think I’d try the app. If you have a compatible camera you can still use the app for basic functions without paying anything.

I have acanon 5dmk3... I was going to get an ipad, even if I can just get a tripod ipad mount and just use a cable for now, that will be better than nothing...

Well then get the similarly sized windows tablet and run a USB tether cable to it. All other options are terrible clunky and not that great. On 5Ds you can at least get Canon's wifi card with their half-useless app, well useless because phone screen is too small to make it worthy to me.

But would always need to be connected to internet, not ideal if on location with no internet... and phone dongle would kill data.?

As above, the wifi with cameras, whether in camera, with a Memory card or a proprietary wifi adaptor creates its own network. So you connect your phone / tablet / laptop to the wifi signal transmitted from the camera to communicate.

OK but my 5dmk3 has no wifi, but I guess fro what I am reading is the camranger just creates its own wifi..

Can't you get an eyefi card?
Don't know if it would work for control though

Don't they always need a wifi connection tho? Not ideal if out on location.

I bought a used camranger 1 - £50.. Will be all I need for now, though till I get an ipad I will just tether with a wire into lightroom for now.
