Got a long awaited weekend off this weekend, first for weeks. My kids are both under 6 and we're thinking about taking them camping for the weekend.

Never done that with kids so young - are we mad?
 
I took a 6 week old baby for a weekend camping session some 40+ years ago :D
 
Not at all

I've 4 kids (14,6,3,1) and we've had some great times camping.

Depends a lot on the campsite of course but they love it.

I'll 'wild camp' with my eldest or we'll take the big 8 man jobby with carpets, furniture and cooking equipment for a bit of 'glamping'

I've had ours camping at less than a month old and they've slept fine.

Camping with Springer Spaniels is more hassle. lol

Aww they'll love it, I took mine many years ago, they were 1 and 4 .. Thoroughly enjoyed it.. Go with the flow, don't stress if weather is yukky, make it part of the fun..

No you're not mad, a weekend goes by very quickly. Just plan some activities to do during the days including wet weather alternatives and I'm sure you'll have a great time.
(unless you have to put up a tent that you're unfamiliar with whilst its windy and/or raining and/or the kids are hungry and/or tired!)
 
with babies - try and keep to normal routine - with older kids - relax and enjoy it - normal routine gets flung out of the tent
 
ok! Thinking of heading across to norfolk for it, can anyone recomend some good sites?
 
I'm thinking of camping this summer with my kids. Me and the Mrs are used to camping but never tried it with the kids. My boys are aged 3 and 4 so I'd imagine they'll like it.

In answer to the original question, id say go for it. Its one of the things im really looking forward to doing when my Daughter is old enough.

Have a plan B in case it becomes desirable to bale out. Might not be fun if the little ones get midge bites.

We did a good one couple of years ago. Right by the beach. Can't remember the name, but will ask OH when I get home.

And, yes camping with littlies is easier than with older ones IMHO.

Have stayed at Overstrand campsite.
Cracking sandy beach.
 
been camping with kids of various ages for years but got a caravan about 3 years ago camping was getting a little too uncomfortable

the kids love it but i think the place you stay will determine how much you enjoy the experience ( and the weather )
we found a nice family run camp/caravan site in newquay and we've been going there for the last 15 years it's great to get away from the rat race from time to time the place is well run and peaceful ( very important for me ) iv'e no doubt theres many like it around the country

over the years we've gone from this

the first camping trip to newquay with just the wife for the 1999 eclipse

to this last august


half the extended family tag along now :nailbiting:

but... camping is not for everybody it's one of those things you'll really enjoy or you'll hate it
 
Camped with our kids since they were about one year old - no problems at all.

It is many years since I have been there but Manor Farm Caravan and Camping Site at East Runton was good.

big campers here some I love some I love less..

I genuinely love sleeping in a tent waking up in the morning going for a walk whilst the rest of the family are sleeping then frying up some bacon and getting the water boiled, the fresh air is great the kids love it and its happy times.

on the other side I do not like campsites where its just a field full of windbreak barriers marking territory, this is usually the holiday seaside type camping where people are camping because its the cheap option, I don't mind cheap options but all this barricading around the tent is not in the spirit of the camping experience, same goes for these portable aerials and even satellite dishes you see, what is the point.. I am not that big a fan of EHU but when the kids were toddlers and camping for more than a few nights its the smart things to do.

No you are not mad it can be really good fun, providing it's planned well. I have been with the missus and grand kids and it was a real laugh, my missus has only just come back from Wales. She went with the family, and two youngsters one four the other under one, it went really well she says.

now then as you can see there are a lot of children when we go camping with ages ranging from 1 yrs to late teenage windbreakers to barrier the area is absolutely essential to stop the smaller ones wandering
holiday seaside camping is exactly why we are there and to be honest it aint that cheap in peak season
 
ok seems like all positive, so will be giving it a go!
 
I'm used to camping. Thought it would be fun. Started great in first day, children immediately made friends, had a good time. That first night temperature dropped to one degree, baby had to come in my sleeping back. The following morning it rained like I've never seen before. Toilets were filthy, showers were worse. My wife decided to sit in the car with the children whilst I collapsed everything and we drove home. That afternoon we booked a villa with private pool and haven't looked back since.

I still like it when the weather is good, but not too good.

just because your camping set up is what I don't like about camping please do not see it as a personal attack I would have posted exactly the same had your post not been there. I do happen to own a windbreak but its proper camping one that doesn't leave big holes in the ground and I only use it to stop the Trangia from blowing out. I have been camping with the kids since my eldest was still in her first year(she is 13 in 2 weeks), cannot say I have ever had a concern with them wandering.
 
I cannot see why camping would be anymore stressful than any other holiday...but make sure you take plenty of loo roll, don't want to be running out..dock leaves are getting rare

Seriously though I just hope you find a good pitch and have fun. I remember some fab camping breaks as a really young kid.

looking at the post it looked like you were personaly attacking my set up i'm glad you cleared that up :)

we really do need to have those windbreakers in place when 5 of the young ones are under 8 years of age but it's mainly there for kate ( ive posted about kate before ) who has no understanding of danger , take your eyes off her for one second and she's off
at least with those in place she's reasonably safe

we all have our own idea of what a camping trip should be, for me it is time with my extended family with no distractions
trouble is i need a holiday when i get back to recover :)

Camping with kids is great. We did it with all ours when little most weekends. We had a trailer tent and would just take off. Great fun.
