Next year I want to go to France by motorbike to do some photography, I am thinking of going with my son -- also a photographer -- during August/September, or April/May. For those familiar with events in France perhaps you could give me some potential destinations where photogenic events might be happening?

Cheers

In late Sept the Coupe Icare (ner Grenoble) will provide some fantastic photos

Provence in the spring and Autumn is beautiful, but I would stay away from that area in July and August. The Dentilles and Mt Ventoux are just two locations for great photograph opportunities. There are also lots of good campsites in the area.

The roads can be very crowded in august when a lot of French people take their holydays. It depends what you are looking for. There are markets every were good foe street style. Dejon has some lovely architecture. The Bergerac area has lovely landscapes and the walled towns. You can find good locations all over France. Just stay off the motorways and travel through the towns and countryside.

Loads and loads of options. Not sure on specific events but location wise:

Some great cities/Towns, Paris, Marseille, Carcassonne, Nice, Lyon, Grenoble, I could go on.
The Alps, foothills and surrounding areas including Provence.
Dordogne. Rocamodour, Sarlat etc
Beaches of Northern France, Mont saint Michel etc.
Could go on forever with suggestions.

How long are you going to be there and how long are you going to spend travelling between destinations?

Having lived here (in France) for 5 1/2 years then I'd recommend August/September ahead of April/May. There'll be a far wider diversity of subjects and the weather will likely be more amenable....April/May can glorious or changeable in most regions. I can give some ideas for western and south-western France if you care to be more specific about what you're main focus will be.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We have been to France camping several times before but always have gone for the scenery however we are thinking of going to some event in France, something like the Oktoberfest in Germany, or the running of the bulls in Pamplona in Spain. Do the French have a famous festival or event we could visit (not the Le Mans 24 hour, we've done that) that anyone knows of?

There are 8 pages of festivals here....something for all tastes (and even a photography festival)
