Camp Bastion is handed over. Was it all worth it?

But the point is that we have spent the money and the problem groups have not remotely been eliminated. That makes it a waste. They have just hopped over the border plus sprung up in a number of other places. Spending on checking who comes and goes from the UK/ monitoring those here who could be a threat etc. would seem to achieve better value without 453 personnel being dead and 2000 plus maimed and wounded.

You hunt them wherever they pop up next. Fighting these Islamic jihadists is a long term war and we're seeing that in Syria right now that leaving them to their own devices isn't an option. Pulling up the drawbridge doesn't help the rest of the world or your allies.

A very high cost in terms of human life. I do think it was probably worth it, although terribly high

So if we acknowledge that we keep fighting terrorism wherever it pops up why the reduction in armed forces. Longer tours for the remaining personnel more stress more casualties. And the plan to recruit more reservists is a complete non event. Who the hell in their right mind is going to volunteer to become a reservist when they can see the government taking the armed forces apart piece by piece.

We are at greater risk from the fifth column that is operating in this country. It is time that the rest of the world (esp. the oil rich lot) did a bit more to help. Seems to be the same people who are always at the front in these fights - USA, UK and Commonwealth allies.

When you refer to the 5th column do you have a specific group in mind?

Yes, that group that supports/sympathises with those that would commit acts of terrorism against the UK.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia throw their petrodollars at these puritanical branches of Islam, so I can't see them being much help in the long term. Only when they are in danger, like with the march of ISIS, do they seem to react when their economic interests or territory is at risk.

That is certainly alleged and the Saudi rulers are from that Wahhibi lot (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/saudi/analyses/wahhabism.html - that is disturbing). I don't know whether it is the governments of these countries that provide funding or rich individuals in the countries. Yes, you are correct about what it takes to get them to react to threats, i.e. their own survival has to be on the line.
To be quite blunt, if it was not the case that we need the heavy oil from the middle east we would leave ISIS to run over them.
