Guys I am looking for a light weight rustle free camo top...it needs to be nettle preferable bramble and thistle proof. I crawl about in the mud so something hard wariing and ideally reinforced on elbows. above all it need to be cool, so I'm asking alot. Camo has to blend into UK countryside colours. harwoods green? You tell me?

I guess not so many of us here stalk low so replies will be few, but I have to ask, I'd be so grateful for any input.

I probably made a massive error recently in part my failings/stupidity sure, also wanting the best for my subject was a player ( roe mum's with kids are sketchy at best) but at the same time I was so damn hot I wasn't thinking things through.

anyways thanks for the help if you can

take care

Hi Stu
Sorry I can’t give a specific recommendation but when I need similar stuff I do the rounds on the army surplus stores- you soon find out who knows what and who you can trust. My latest purchase was some German army waterproof trousers which have stood up to some abuse. I find that I do not need canon but olive green does just as well- have had rats and wrens on me without any issues. Then again with my odd shape who needs camo!!!
Cheers
John

You may be better off joining a hunting / shooting forum or looking at huting/shooting related website as they use a lot of camo stuff.

Army surplus stores are also a good place to look for all things camo.

I don't have experience with camo clothing but generally cooler clothing is thinner so you may struggle to meet all your requirements. I'd suggest looking at army surplus gear perhaps something like this https://www.armykit.com/british-army-mtp-pcs-smock-new-unissued
yes it's a bit of a conundrum traditionally the way around the variation in Brit weather is layers, but an outer that might serve my specific needs is something I've longer for each summer

cheers for the link , something similar is already on my radar (y) thanks for taking the time

Elliot you are spot on I'm looking along those lines exactly.especially deer stalking....which bar the difference in final "shot" there's being a bullet mine and image seems to be the closest "pastime" to what I do again cheers for the link thank you.

Hiya John, maybe you are right about camo. probably the essentials with my kind of imagemaking and getting close are more about hiding the three white blobs.hands and face and how one moves/uses cover/shade.are more important than actual camo,

But then, I guess I kinda like camo. Mate i'm actually sat in brit army camo trousers olive green top and T shirt all ex army surplus... military surplus has been a go to of mine clothing wise for years LMAO I was trying to make red squiggle pics late last summer and had a robin using me as a perch, ha I'd rather not the rat ,but I'd take a wren, odd shape you and me both:LOL:

Guys i'm six decades in not exactly sure how long toggin' , but it's while now and the niche /style of wildlife especially this focus on deer/hare, scrubbling about down low isn't for everyone, but I love it and the interactions, with subjects can be so special

All my life there has been this passion about getting close to ickle beasties and I've pretty much always worn camoflage/green. Camo in it's various forms has really evolved over those decades, with hi definition printing . For me it's allowed a freedom not only to move but not use hides. which can be an art form to set in the right place.

I've been using a Canadian company called Sportschief for maybe 20/30 years as my 3 season outers . IE waterproof coat leggings, really good quality, my other half has a coat that looks almost new after 20years plus, mind her gear doesn't quite get the hammering I give to mine. Good reliable clothing, though.

So for the next guy basically Decathlon, Jack Pyke Sportschief et al all more shooting based clothing makers as well are army surplus are where my base searches are starting, just haven't pinned down what I want as yet .

thanks for the replies lads !!

The old British army para smock was lightweight and hard wearing, same with trousres, I still have my old DPM ones somewhere (might come in handy the way the worlds going) Personally I'd look at the DPM rather than the newer MTP camo, I find the newer one is better suited to sandy areas like dunes, a bit light colour for woods.
You can often pick these up at car boot sales for a few quid.

I've got one of these, its light enough that I can wear it over a T and not get too hot ( though tbf, UK temps rarely get high enough for me) it is wind proof and and Has protected me from nettles, it's nice close woven cotton so brambles shouldn't wreak it either

I have 2 of these, quite durable and cheap as chips. They do fade but I have washed the daylights out of mine. Structurally very good though. Not water/mudproof but I don't really get all that muddy. I tie mine around my waist when walking on warm days and put it on when I'm set up on location. I always order a size too big. Comfy as can be.

I'd rather have my camo shirt than olive green or coyote tan. After that, I'd rather have my olive green or coyote than anything else.

Unfortunately I don't think the 5.11 shirt I normally wear is still going. So I'm interested to see what else comes up here.

Looks a lot like this one. I have a merino wool underneath; never used the shop but that's the shirt.

Thanks for the reply.is it Dawn? I saw your Roe , lol as always I left a reply and didn't hit submit there either, DOPE !!

Thanks for the link, think my Sportschief gear is that exact pattern.....to me a bit on the light side for brit woodland
@dale @turbotoes @swanseamale47

Wayne, Dale Tara.................sorry guys :headbang: I wrote a huge long multi post to all of you obviously didn't hit submit as above thanks for the links and thought bless ya all.

Ok guys I've sort of come out here I have some Jack Pyke English Oak evolution ( mouth full huh?) gear on it's way .might also grab a jacket shortly. Probably Rannock maybe hunter..probably Rannock. I'd like to try one on

I spent most of yesterday trying to find a local stockist of Jack Pyke gear so I could actually see what I was after handle it sizes etc etc. What I can say is the JP stockists list on website is rummin useless So many phone calls so much time wasted hard trying to support local folks. Gave up tips here for next guy is don't go the instant gratifaction of amazon.(probably lets see if the gear turns up:LOL: )

I'll give you amazon links for the mo......and then when stuff arrives can recommend supplier as I've not used them before but amazon is way more expensive.

So i've gone for a base layer like this

A hoodie like this

and probably outer like this

Not to be worn all together...HMMMMM obviously summer has gone petetong so maybe that isn't true.:D It's just a base combo of gear that might or might not help with my problems

Once again huge apology for beiing me and not replying I did but so often rush off to other things I forget to submit the blummiin post. thanks for the replies guys it just seems so rude ignoring 'all .I'm not that just a fruit cake tis all

I have bought blind to some extent really wanted to find a local supplier tried gun shops angling shops outdoor shop all to no avail.do like the colours though:LOL: Will come back on this

and now hit submit;)

take care

Late to the party...
Unless going full ghillie I find camo to be of no real benefit; even a camo hide draws attention if just recently put up. And full ghillie sucks...

You only need clothing that isn't bright/flashy. That said, I usually use a two piece hunting jacket with a lighter shell and warmer liner for when needed. The benefit of hunting gear is it's one of very few designed to actually be out in the weather for hours on end. It's weatherproof, durable, and quiet. This is the jacket I've used for years.

Might I add "quiet" to that as well? I've got some waterproof tops that are significantly noisier than the couple I have that are designed for hunters.

Thanks Tara,

you can and you are spot on although Steve did cover that last but one sentence Nod lol only noted because it made me smile along the lines of " I'd do that" (y) (y)

Maybe late but most welcome Steven:)

I've never gone to the lengths of ghillie suits......so can't comment, and you probably make a fair and valid point re camo, I often wonder if my love of it is irrational that said it works for me and if one is comfy in one's head maybe that translates into the frames made . Hell I dunno I get very close to a deer IE Roe, that is very skittish regularly................... maybe camo is part of that....... being utterly frank with my self tis probably more about change of body shape being low using the wind and being slow and not showing 3 white blobs of face and hands. I guess my mindset is if it ain't broke ........ But yes fair comment. and yes the tie in to hunting leastways deer stalking re clothing does provide usable cloths for us wild life togs...... exactly as you mentioned Weather proof durable and quiet. Hmm and I also would muse the gear stateside to be superior to what's available here.

This whole post came about after a massive gaff I made on a hot day, I was so how in my gear it was dreadful. I had pinned down mum roe and her twins to a certain spot, previously. On approach, a very careful approach one kid came out of the wood some way in front of me,sadly a low plane spooked it as I closed in on the ground,so nearly got frames. By this time heat was really getting to me. I stuck it out closing down yards for maybe an hour. then suddenly mum came out almost on top of me I moved just slightly too fast, she spooked. I got up left and started ripping coat off once a fair distance away.

Shaz was aghast.....see so so often this happens to me and the deer isn't really spooked it runs off a few yards and then comes back, curiosity I guess.over and over my lady watches this, happen.

Literally in the heat of the moment I chose to leave thinking I don't want to spook her any more she has kids maybe I'll get another chance but a huge player was how uncomfortable I was.

If I had of just stayed put mum was actually on her way back to me 2kids in tow as she had not figured me as a danger, I was just this thing on the floor dressed in camo that moved in front of her and made her jump.

That's the tale guys behind this thread. why i've finally varied my clothing choices a bit more to possibly take into account hot british weather. Largely my gear serves me well

Roe are so tricky to get to grips with regularly anyway. Closing down on a mum with little ones is almost as hard as catching them rutting, these chances are so so hard won. just so infrequent for me at least. So although I've hauled myself over the coals on this gaff, what's new...........I really could help myself with some better summer gear that is a bit kinda on me olde bones. After all is said and done the most interesting fascets of roe life happen in summer Ii should have covered this base years ago not just tough it out until I really mess up

So thanks all for the help I'm very grateful............... we'll see how the gear (cloths ) work out and if they come ii'll share where

Little update on the 2 items above, the amour top is real thin a proper balls to the wall base layer.....I'd probably buy this close to size. Time will tell how it actually works. It doesn't fit my original brief but is it wicks well it might be useful

The field man fleece buy big.maybe a size or 2 big probably 2.note these size notes I did a lot of reading bought 2XL i'm probably a L/ XL......it works for me but if a got another i'd plausibly go 3XL . This might serve me summer needs I guess nettle proof but brambles we will see on this. Remember i am often down low so I hammer clothiing.

On purchase ordered sunday eve delivered 24hour Royal mail tracked free postage. Vendor Military first 15%sale on right now Amazon price on hoodie £32 Military first both garments £34 sommit .

So a heartfelt thanks to Military first apart from the fact it seems there is a 30% sale on now.....................OUCH..why does it always happen to me:LOL:
