Got there today and it's a real Alibaba cave, resisted temptation to buy a mint rolleiflex for £600 or an even nicer Mamiya 6.
Huge stock of film, chemical, lenses everything really, and what I found was really good from them is they tried first to find used filter for my lenses instead of going for new.
£8 for two 72mm filter i cannot complain.
Beware if you go there is realy difficult to resist the urge to spend money:)

Yes, there's lots there Fred, I think the general feeling is to check the price against somewhere else before committing. That said, their Mamiya 6 price for 1 lens and 3 lenses were both pretty much as expected... ie far too much for me to pay :-(.

I do like going in and having alook around though. There's also that nearly invisible shop at 246 - 247 Dalry Road, I think it's called Donald Munro or something, which always has a variety of stuff (not nearly as much, but at more reasonable prices). The photographer owner also trades as SPD Photo, contact details on the web.

Fred, I'm only in Edinburgh a few times a year, irregularly. Steveo-mcg lives there, and at least one other fillum regular (desf?).

Do you ever get to Inverness? I'd love to look in the ffordes shop; online it is fascinating...

I go once a year, and really want to go this year to.
It"s a great place but is not like cameraticks were everything is on display.
Most of the thing are behind them over the counter and you have to ask to see.
About 50% of there stock is kept in a warehouse and you have to call in advance to see it in the shop when you are going.(mostly bags and big item)
Also is not in Inverness but in beauly, so you need a car to get there.
The staff is very good and it"s worth the journey.

I walk past that Donald Munro shop semi frequently and there's no indication from the exterior that they sell any camera equipment (although I usually walk on the other side of the street so maybe there's something in the window I haven't seen). The sign simply says photographic studio or something to that effect.

What do they sell? Is it similar to Cameratiks?

I remember the shop in Dalry from many years ago, didn't realise it was still there! It's not a photo shop as such though is it, the main business is something unrelated I seem to remember*.

Ffordes is worth a visit if you have transport as mentioned, they have a great coffee shop and gallery but also it's a beautiful part of the world. Go up the road past it into Glen Affric and it's breathtaking!

*looks like he is a pro photographer so not exactly unrelated! :)

The Donald Munro sop seels a range of film gear, but like the descripton of Ffordes, it's behind the counter or downstairs. The owner is a working photographer, and sometimes out on a shoot; the shop may be open when he's out, but nothing is priced except in his head so it's worth ringing up if you're interested. He is very knowledgeable and chatty in an open, friendly way; I felt better towards him than to the Cameratiks/Camerabase folk (though I'm sure they're fine). There were a few folders on display when I was last there, but mainly film 35mm gear; not sure what else was "downstairs". He closes for lunch...

Cameraticks as to guy serving, a very nice one very chatty and the grumpy and well reviewed owner.
Catch him on a bad day and you will not want to go back, the other guy use to have is own shop and is very knowledgeable .

I've been to Ffordes a couple of times and all the guys there are knowledgeable and friendly, always have time to chat about the kit and photography in general. I bought a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 from them last year and went back later in the week to see if they had a case for it. The guy said "hang on I think I saw one the other day" and came back with an original, perfect condition Nikon hardcase. I asked how much and he gave it to me free and apologised for not spotting it when I bought the lens. They sell for about £40 on the bay.

+1
They really are that good:thumbs:

One problem with Ffordes is that they are only open Monday to Friday.

The cafe and gallery are open at the weekend but the treasure trove upstairs is out of reach. :(
