Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew any good DSLR's under a price of £300. At the moment I have been looking at the Canon EOS 20D, if anyone has used this camera or has the camera themselves, let me know pro's and con's about it? I have also been looking at they Sony Alpha 290, is this a good camera, and what's it like in comparison to the Canon EOS 20D? Any other suggestions about other cameras are more than welcome! :)

I think you can get a decent condition Canon 40D for that sort of money now. Pair it up with something like the 17-85 IS kit lens it came with and that is a very capable setup for a few hundred quid. Also ideal platform to upgrade from if you get more serious in the future. Good luck!
 
I've just bought a 40D and from what I could tell from my hunting the going rate for a used 40D varies from about £350-£450. MPB occasionally have them in (there's one there now I think) and LCE have/had a few....as well as ebay of course.
 
Is your budget just for the body or do you need a kit lens as well?
 
Um, either really :) Preferable the kit lens as well. But just the body is fine :)

The 40D was discontinued in late 2008 IIRC, and you're unlikely to find a new one now, so the prices will be for used ones. It was replaced by the 50D and, more recently, the 60D but is still an excellent camera. The 17-85mm lens isn't the best example of Canon's glass, but it beats the 18-55mm, and can produce very decent images. Just don't pay too much for one.

on the subject at hand - check out MPB photographic - banner add at the top of the forum , they usually have s/h 20D, 30D, 40D and 400D/450D all of which are in the region of your budget

( I recently got a 450D with a grip and four batteries from them for £330 )
