There is a fine selection of cameras for sale on Gumtree at the moment. Some would wonder if they had been knicked!

Worth having a look for your area if you have lost anything lately

Most don't even exist, the sellers are in Eastern Europe "on holiday" and want the money sent by WU....

Not paraniod just read on here regularly of stolen cameras & it seems to be one way of shifting them

There's a lovely Canon 500D for sale in Cardiff at the moment for example if anyone is interested. Pity the spelling is a little wonky!!!

there ghosts mate there after your e-mail at the very least :)

theres a lot of cameras for sale on ebay, doesnt mean all of them are stolen :)

I enquired about 1 on gum tree when I was looking for my D50. The advert seemed genuine, was located with in collect in person distance but the reply I got screamed of scam and was using tactics like "I have some one else coming to look but if you get here first" etc.

I suspect they took a genuine advert and copied it to get punters.

How about this reply I got to my enquiry about a 5D MK II for (IIRC) £500 (yeah right)

The price includes delivery up to your address... I decided to sell this digital camera because I am out in the country with personal business... For this reason, I left this digital camera in custody of delivery company... The only way that I will make this transaction is through eBay... Using eBay service you will have the chance to see this digital camera, before I receive any funds... The funds will be secured until the digital camera are delivered to you... If you want to buy this digital camera need to send me your full name and address where you want to receive the digital camera to can start the transaction... eBay they will contact you with the confirmation off the transaction and you will have to follow their instruction... I wait your email as soon as possible... Thanks again

Ooo! That sounds good. Got a link? ;)

Unfortunately, gumtree has become a haven for scammers to the extent where you can't trust anything at all, which is why I wouldn't buy anything from there.

i am sure there are a few on there that are not out to rob you blind. but as the case with this sort of thing, a lot are, i tried to sell my A200 on there and got loads of call`s about it, most were from north london though, so it never did sell via there.

It's not just buying stuff off that site that you have to be careful of, it's selling it too. I tried selling a PS2 on there, and just got a load of people claiming to want the product sent to another country, and that they'd be willing to pay 4x the asking price for it, lol.

It is a shame that scammers had to just completely ruin that site :shake:

I've had some luck selling and buying stuff on Gumtree, but also had a ridiculous amount of spam and dodgy emails. Many items advertised just don't exist, I would take extreme care doing anything with Gumtree.

I'd trust gumtree for a sofa or fridge maybe, but never anything portable and electronic-y!

I've bought and sold a bunch of lenses (including buying a 300/2.8L and selling a Sigma 300/2.8), and flashes on Gumtree. I got a bargain Billingham bag there too, thinking about it. The cons stand out a mile and can be easily ignored, and the real sales can be decent deals. Worth looking at Gumtree from time to time. Craigslist (London) on the otherhang has proved a waste of time for me.

I advertise my gear on Gumtree if it doesn't sell here at TP quickly, so there will likely be an 85/1.2L and a 1DmkII going on there soon in the North London area!

****ing Gumtree.

I posted an ad for my D90, grip and lens. I had 10 replies, 9 of them were scammers. Total waste of time - wide birth required.

Most of the scams are obvious to those of us in the know but there must be people who fall for them just lured in by the low prices - there was a &d on there yesterday for £460!!

I never had any luck with Gumtree. Advertised few small items in past and apart from junk never mails, no responses. Just few days ago, I saw a deal for camera which is too good to be true and seller never bothered to reply.

As you say the scams are usually obvious!
I've also found some that seems genuine that then have lost receipts or can't remember where they bought tat £1500 camera!

Sometimes it's scam, sometimes it's not. I managed to pick up some good stuff from Gumtree. First thing finding the ad is calling and arranging meeting the same day. Just by doing it you can always lower the price and know if it's genuine.

There was an ad recently for 5D MK2 kit for 1200GBP. Collection London. After first email the answer was like this: I'm out of london, in Scotland due to sister's birth. Will be back in a week but if you want camera, you can come pick it up or use courier.
Of course courier was fake and the website was registered just two days ago, the moment I emailed "seller"... fail :D

just watch out if they want to meet in an area you dont know , there is a good chance of getting whacked and ending up with nothing :bang:

I saw in a mag that over 75% of bikes for sale on gumtree are stolen makes you think twice about buying things off there.

Saw a nice Nikon 24-70 lens on GT the other day - new and an 'unwanted gift'. No receipt obviously. Was tempted until I saw that exactly the same picture (and not a stock picture) was on ebay, being used by a high-rated seller, who confirmed that he was not also advertising on GT.

i got a great deal on a lens, id priced it at around £200-£250 new, saw it on edinburgh.gumtree for £45 second hand but photos showed it was in good nick barring a scuff on the barrelwhich was mentioned on the ad, i was dubious but figured it was worth a look, as it was round the corner from me, turned out the guy had just opened a studio with a few other people, knew what he was selling and that it was so cheap and was getting rid of things and upgrading, the lens came just with caps and nothing else but it was an ace deal

There is a Canon 1D mark IV on sale here for .............guess £500!!!:nono:

It has got "dont even go there" written all over it.

Sadly, some people will go there.

And I find that extremely sad :'(

sometimes you win.

was looking for a hood for one of my Canon FD lens..in shops at £40 ..!

saw a lens for sale and the seller agreed to sell me the hood ....for £10

actually arrived .. *and* he emailed to see delivered ok

[having read this - never again..!]

Gumtree is the biggest waste of space on t'net.

I guess that's because Ads are not moderated by anyone. You don't need have any measurable indicators like ebay feedbacks or iTrader feedbacks here. Also these bogus sellers can chose not to reply if they think prospective buyer can't be "conned" by them as you can't see their details.

I'll take two at that price ! :):)

I would only use GT for collection stuff, never send the cash and hope it turns up.
