Besides photography I also love to follow whats going on up there in the wilderness of Space.

The point of this post and feel free to move it if required is equipment based.

NASA's latest picture shows Spacewalker Danny Olivas out in space with a Camera in tow. Anyone have an idea what he may be using?

NASA has some amazing photography if you have time to spend on their site taken from various spacewalks and missions onboard the Shuttle and the ISS.

impossible to say from the photograph i reckon , aside from that , he is one lucky togger to get the opportunity to do what he is doing

Aren't there supposed to be a few Hasselblad bodies (modified for space use) left on the Moon's surface? Apparently to save on weight for the journey back they took the film backs and then left the bodies for anyone who wanted them.

I'm not sure these days but NASA always used Hasselblad cameras, rumour has it an astronaut smuggled one on board during the Apollo missions or something similar and they were so impressed with the picture quality they contacted Hasselblad who started producing cameras for them that were easy for the Spacemen to use.

I am no expert but I am pretty sure, Hasselblad made custom cameras for a mission and the images are amazing, I will try and find the link.

But it's a white lens.....it must be Canon ;)

Nikon will paint your lens white if you ask nicely - and for NASA, I expect they'd make them in pink if need be!

The Hasselblads have been largely discontinued as it has proved easier to train non-photographer astronauts to use DSLR cameras than the slightly more complex MF 'Blads...
I know I saw a phot showing D2x cameras being used about 2 years ago - probably D3/D3x by now...

left the bodies for anyone who wanted them.

That's so good I had to quote it.

The Hassleblad cameras used on the moon missions were special modified motor drive 500C. The cameras took 70mm rolls of Ektachrome film. I'm not sure how many were left behind on the moon but I believe one was orbiting the earth

I wouldn't mind one, plus I am free this weekend if anyone wants to come with.

Have you seen this Flickr photostream by someone who works for NASA

Getting there would probably cost the same as 12 modern Hasselblad bodies too :)

buzz (no connection).

Plus you know that on the flight to get them you'd be sitting beside someone who got their ticket for £99 off Teletext

Just a heads up to let everyone know that the latest Nikonians Image Doctors podcast (number 119) features an astronaught who went on one of the recent spce shuttle missions to the international space station. He talks about photography and photo equipment on the shuttle.

I'm half way though listening and it's quite interesting (the podcast is also embedded with images from the trip).
