Hi all, just after a little advice.......So I have been thinking of upgrading my camera body for a few months now from a 400d to a 40/50D depending on finances. Whilst visiting the parents today though my Dad offered me his 5D (mark I) body for my birthday in the summer :) Now other than it being full frame I don't really know an awful lot about it. How am I likely to find it going from a 400 to a 5? Is it likely to be a step learning curve or will I end up not looking back?! Any advice/thoughts would be great, thanks!

I dont know anything about that camera but if you have ef-s lenses they wont work on full frame cameras, only ef lenses work. If you post up what lenses you currently have ill be able to tell you if you are unsure whether they will work or not.

All cameras do roughly the same thing. Just that some have more buttons than others. You will find the 5D a quantum leap up from the 400D in terms of quality of shot - it has quite a few generations of evolution between it and the older model. Don't be scared of it - it's only a camera! But, as Dex says, any ef-s lenses won't fit. Is your dad weighing in with some glass as well as the body? Or do you have some ef lenses?

Hi Dani, I went from a 550D to a 7D and 5DMkII combo and the difference is amazing. The 5 Series bodies are pure class, though you will have to get used to the size and weight difference. Once you get used to that you should be fine as any camera does basically the same thing. Just practice till you get used to it. As for lenses, depends on what style of shooting you do, but I'd suggest you get a 50 f1.8 to start with as a 50 on a FF body is an excellent length. If you sell the 400D and lenses and keep saving you should be able to get a decent lens or two for your birthday.

Thanks for the input everyone! I have just double checked my lenses and have 2 canon ef, a 50mm and a 28-135mm which is a good start. I would need to get rid of my 55-250 ef-s and replace it with something suitable. Also have a tamron 19-35mm which I'm not entirely sure what it is, guessing by the red dot its ef?? If I sell my 400 and ef-s lens as well as putting in the money I would have paid to upgrade the body myself then it should be able to get a pretty tidy lens :) Looking forward to august even more now!!

Your tamron will work fine on the 5D. To replace your 55-250 i would highly reccomend a 70-200 f4.0, can be had s/h for around £399, thats what i have done and its an incredible bit of glass.

Sounds as if you have a pretty good range of lenses to get you going. Don't rush into spending the proceeds of the 400D sale. Have you got a flash? A tripod? A decent bag? Photoshop?

Thanks for recommend Dex. Was thinking of that as a provisional possibility and from what I've read looking at it more can't seem to find anything bad said about the lens! I think I'm pretty much covered on other bases Jon - other than the tripod front but I have been meaning to remedy that for a long time, so I'm sure I'll have that sorted by August! Just told my Dad that I will happily take the 5D off his hands so think I'm good to go.....in 5 months anyway!

Depending on what you photograph you may find the loss of reach an issue.
I love the fact that my 70-200 becomes 320 at the long end...

I moved from a 400d (bought new) to a 40d (bought from the forums) and the 40d does everything I would need at the moment. More megapixels might be useful but the 40d RAW files are very manageable...
