Hi guys

I'm thinking of upgrading my Nikon D3100 with a D90, PXing the 3100 to save the hassle of selling it.

I just rang a camera shop & they tried to talk me out of getting a D90 telling me that it was old technology & buy a D7000 instead.

Also they offered me £80 for my D3100 (body only).

I'm confused now, what do you guys think about the D90, is it outdated?

If it does not do something that you want it to do - and there is something out there that does... then it is outdated.
 
The D90 was released in August 2008, the D7000 2 years later. It isn't that old, but the D7000 does have a newer sensor.... Thr D7000 has more pixels, a bit better ISO performance....it's supposedly the successor to the D90, and around £300-£400 more expensive than the D90 (new).

What is the reason for your wish to upgrade? Would good glass be a better investment?
 
£80 F*** that!! You would get more money if you sell it on Ebay.

I do think the D7000 is a great piece of kit, however I keep reading about different problems and faults with them but I suppose that can all be ironed out on the warranty just annoying though.

D90 is a superb camera though, friend of mine done my wedding with his D90 and the picture quality was brilliant.
 
In many ways the digtal DSLR has lost a lot of meaning as a camera,before you know it their a new model out,and your using old tec :(

But if the camera you are using does the job who cares if it old tec,and if you want to upgrade pick the model that suit you,not what the camera shop wants to sell you :)
 
Many people think upgrading a model will give them better image quality it isn't always true or rarely true. So the extra money is for better bodies, weather sealing, more focus points, faster AF, more direct controls etc.. So you need to ask yourself if you really need any of this, or if you do, what is it you want from a upgrade and then decide from there. The d3100 and d90 IQ and iso performance is about the same.

Please don't give this away for £80. Stick it on gumtree it will take you 5 mins to list and get a decent price for it. It's probable worth 3 times that, they were taking the p*ss! A little tip sell it with the kit lens entry level cameras sell much better with the lens. Remember you are more than likely selling to a first time dslr buyer. The money you have saved by not getting ripped off by the part ex get yourself a tamron 17-50.

Thanks for all the replies & advice guys, the main reason for upgrading was controls & FPS.

I'm going to see if I can handle a D90 in a shop, see if I like the feel, weight & controls.

A new lens was another way to go. We'll see :-)
 
Where in south wales was that shop that offered you £80 so i can give them a wide berth!

A camera store tried to sway you into buying the more expensive option? hmmm ... :P

Nothing wrong with the D90. These stores are trained to push the latest gadgets and gear, they will say the D7000 is outdated as soon as the D7100 [or whatever replaces it] comes out.
 
Don't just take what anyone in any shop tells you. Push them to explain why the item they are suggesting is better, i.e. "you say the D7000 is a better buy, can you explain what features and functionality differences lead you to say this please?"
 
Why not buy on here? I've had all my lenses from members of TP and would far rather trust here than E- bay, at least you know on here you are dealing with a genuine photographer which you can't really say with e-bay. With regard to your question, obviously a shop is going to try and sell you the latest model, but as the others have said if the D90 does all you want, ( and only you know that) then why spend a lot more on the D7000. This is the question I asked myself when I bought my D90, and although I admit if I had had enough to get a D7000, which no doubt is a superb camera, I might have had to think longer, but I certainly don't regret buying the D90. I would spend the extra cash if you have it on glass, and perhaps when you are ready to upgrade the body, the D7000 will have been superseded but you will still have quality lenses.

I was thinking the same last week, so posted the above thread for some advice. So glad I did... I'm now planning on holding off and going for a D7000 at the end of the year.

Maybe the D7100 will be out by then, and you could get a D7000 at a snitch (or have a slightly better camera for the same-ish money?)
