Thinking of updating my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, but I'm not sure which model to go for.

Any suggestions as to which model I should get?

I already have a 60mm Macro, 50mm 1.8 & an 18-55mm lens.

I have an interest in Macro photography but I'd also like to try out other types of photography.

Budget wise I'd probably say around £600-800.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks! :)

Hi

You will get more out your photography by buying lenses and flashes in my opinion, than upgrading a fairly decent camera.

What about a wide angle or telezoom and a flash or two - or even a tripod?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I already have a tripod and I've been after a decent flash for a while. But, before I buy any more lenses I want to try and get to grips with my other lenses first as two of them are really new.

I'm more interested in buying a new camera because of the updated features etc. :)

XTi is a 400D I think, which is getting on a bit now. The evolution of that line goes 450D, 500D, 550D and now the 60D, which is really rather a good camera  If it's got the new features you want, like video, fold out screen etc, go for it.

Take the opportunity top upgade your 18-55 lens, too, which will be the older non-IS version. Newer IS model is completely different optically and much better.

If you're into macro, you really need flash - preferably ring flash. The Marumi works okay and is only about £120. Or you can adapt a regular gun with brackets and diffusers etc but it's a lot of messing around.

Welcome to TP :)

Hey

No probs.....I'd like a newer camera body too :)

You are probably looking for a 60D or at a stretch a 7D. I'm not sure what features especially appeal to you that don't exist in the current body - I'm guessing a movable LCD or inbuilt flash controller?

Any further info would help us point you in the right direction.

I'm sorry if I ask this, but is your current gear not good enough for ya? Or u notice some limitations that u can't get over with? Because with that amount of money, u can buy some pretty good lenses.

I've been looking at the 550D and 60D, but it's just a matter of deciding how much money I'm willing to spend on a body, especially when I'm after a decent flash aswell (plus I'm only a student)

I'll definately invest in a flash, and as for the 18-55 upgrade I may get it depending on my money situation after I've decided on the body :D

Thanks!

The movable LCD is a bonus, but my only concern is, is it going to be flimsy?

Also, is the Live View a good feature?

I like my camera, but I've had it for a few years now & I think it's time for me to upgrade it for the new features...

As I said earlier, I'd much rather get a new body with the money because I've just recently got two new lenses that I'd like to get to grips with first before I buy any more

Thanks for your replies!

The movable screen might not be as flimsy per se but there is obviously more that can go wrong (with the mechanism) or maybe easier damaged compared to a fixed screen.

I don't think some purists see live view as a necessity. I think it is excellent particularly for macro and nightsky with the x10 magnification and sometimes landscape.

Whether or not these features will help you try out other types of photography I am not so sure. I still think lenses and flashes will open up more opportunities.

I'll put my thumbs in for a 60D, right in your price bracket and is a quality camera, probably also a good logical progression from your current model.
