Camera to take pics of active children / blurred background

Well I purchased an Olympus XZ-1 for her - good reviews and with the F1.8 lens etc it fits the bill. Did some test shots yesterday and it does "blur the background" etc. Depth of field is very controllable.

Good review on dpreview (and a good explantion of depth of field in relation to this camera).

Thanks all! Mel

Thanks

But they've got their sums wrong, so what they say about it producing similarly shallow DoF to APS-C and more shallow DoF than MFT with kit zooms is mistaken. It actually delivers greater DoF than either, but it's close to MFT.

F/1.8 on that camera gives DoF equivalent to f/8.5 on full frame, or f/5.3 on Canon APS-C, or f/4.2 on MFT. The formula is simple, it's f/number x crop factor, which in the case of the XZ-1 is 4.7x relative to full frame. Check it here www.dofmaster.com

It gives more shallow DoF control than any other compact though.

Indeed.

That won't be anywhere near comparable to your 7d and 17-55 f/2.8.

Oh well, I hope she's happy with it...
