Camera Straps

LOL - I've three manfrotto tripods and about 5 or 6 plates so one can be sacrificed. Just need to work out how so it can still be used with the strap cord attached.
Gonna end up milling a groove in the tripod head too for the strap. I've thought about this before and decided against it.

If you don't want to spoil one of your own plates with a possibly bodged DIY effort you can get good quality cheap plates from China which have extra slots or threaded holes so you can keep a sling strap attached while using a tripod or monopod.

No would trust my cameras on a cheap plate or a cheap strap !

Probably the best strap in the world. :)

cheap strap isnt a great idea, but the cheap plates ive had have been fine, they are machined from solid so theres much less of a quality difference on them, than say a cheap strap or cheap tripod head

its worth trying to get one with anti rotation lumps and strap slot and right length, if you can

Cheapness is irrelevant. What matters is good engineering design and manufacturing quality. One of the reasons I chose my cheap camera sling strap is that it has a better designed swivel and lesser likelihood of unscrewing in use than the most expensive one I checked out. It's just a bonus when you get better quality at a cheaper price.

There is usually a correlation between price and quality but there are always outliers ;)

I'm looking for an alternative to my BR.

The Luma Labs looks great, but the Joby Sling also looks interesting.

But the peak designs also looks pretty good.

Damn.

Ok, I'm ruling out the luma labs....

So anyone used both the Joby Sling and Peak Designs?

I am in a similar situation. Looking for the perfect strap for my D750. So many to chose from. I don't really want to attach to the base as usually have a tripod mount but can't find decent options to attach to the lug mounts. The ones that attach to the base seem to have the camera ergonomically better to grab and shoot though.

I've recently bought the Peak Designs Slide and Clutch and find that they are both great to use and work well together.

The only downside is that you may need an Arca Swiss adapter for your tripod.

The Peak Designs does look tempting. Is it comfortable for all day use? Does it slide back in postion easy enough? Its a complete different way or working to the BR!

Depending on money the Fusion Plate solves the Tripod Mount.Fusion Photo Gear | Arca-Swiss Quick Release Plate Love mine.

Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.. I have opted to but the OPtech Pro, it just seems to have the edge for me..

Unless you have actually used a Black Rapid type sling strap, it's hard to know how good they are. The key to it, apart from the sliding sling aspect, is the camera hangs upside-down, by a single rotating attachment point. The OpTech is not like that (I'm guessing, for patent reasons). It's worth getting a cheapy like the Q-strap or similar just to try - they're only a fiver on Amazon - see how you like it. Just check the security of the stitching and reinforce that if necessary and they're okay. They're not the same quality as Black Rapid, but most problems with this kind of strap are basically user-error when something comes undone.

Thanks for the advice Hoppy. I have give my Optech a good work out over the last week. I have checked all the stitching and given it a strength test..

It is a great strap, it allows my camera to hang where I wanted it to and it doesnt hang upside down as I didnt want it to.

Thanks again everyone..

Yeah, I cant fault mine, just was looking at the other options!

Looking at getting the fastener that goes on to tripod plate next.

This is the perfect solution in my opinion. I ditched my 10 year old Op Tech strap ( which haven't changed in style or construction ) for a Black Rapid Sport which had taken the pressure off my neck. Coupled with a Fusion Plate it is extremely quick to use with the ability to take it off the strap and place it on a tripod in less than 1O seconds.

What's the difference between the fusion plate and getting the black rapid fastener that fits on to the manfrotto quick release plates?

I would say there is not much difference with the manfrotto plate. If you used an acra Swiss plate it seems to be the only option to get that quick changing. I currently use an acra Swiss plate attached the BR screw connector until I decide whether the fusion plate is worth the cost.

The fusion plate does look a bit skater than BR one. How tight is the hinge on the loop?

I use 'FOOTPRINT' leather wrist camera straps, excellent quality and hand made in the UK by Clive. There's a choice of around fifteen different colours etc, price wise around £16. I can't rate them high enough.

Peter

It's tight. You just unclip your sling strap from the Fusion Plate, fold away the retaining connection on the the underside of the plate and snap it on to the tripod. Takes seconds and nothing to unscrew.

Have a quick look at this video http://fpgear.com/

The folding connecting clip is the difference, there is nothing to connect or unscrew. That's the clever bit.

I wonder if they ship to UK and at what cost! I need to replace my tripod so not sure what plate I would need.

What brands use Arca release plates?

Maybe I should get tripod first in case I go manfrotto!

Edit... Just seen video on YouTube with manfrotto quick release plate being replaced with Arca one.

Fusion do ship to the UK, I've got two of them ( black & red ). One for each camera. Unfortunately, there is no UK supplier which is a shame. I think I paid about £40 for one which I considered good value for money for what it does. It's its extremely well made ( as evidenced in the video) - it's the standard size Manfrotto plate which have been in existence for at least 25 years.

Yeah I know they do manfrotto one, but I'm being more drawn to an Arca plate rather than than the manfrotto one.

I can easily convert a manfrotto quick release to Arca it seems.
