I've recently purchased a Nikon D90 / 18-105 & SB600 flash.

Whilst it's in a 10 year old tatty videocam bag currently I'm looking at a bag to carry around whilst on holiday - probably the lowepro slingshot 200.

However when I want the camera very close to hand I'll of course have it on a strap. Right now I have a regular nikon strap which came with the camera. This
a) Works over a shoulder, camera facing backwards -- but could slip (I'm a beginner) off shoulder
b) Can be slung around neck, but then exposes the lens & demonstrates the "tourist" look

Is there a better way? How about a strap that goes over neck_shoulder, something a little longer and fairly cheap? A good combinations that works together with a sensible back for your average beginner/tourist?

Any beginner recommendations welcome. I hand't planned for a strap and have rather blown my budget already.

I use one of these, i wear over one shoulder camera at my hip.

Wear the camera slung 'bandolier' style with the prism housing against your body, this will make the lens lie vertically and close to the body.

Put one arm and your head through, simple and comfortable, especially if you use the OPTECH strap, the basic one will do.

Thats what i was trying to say but couldnt explain it as well

The best strap I've ever found for shoulder use is the Upstrap link_here.

But they're not cheap and of the two I've bought I got stuffed for custom duty and vat both times. But once you've got over the shock of that, they really do just sit on your shoulder without slipping at all.

Well thanks to wikipedia I now know what a "Bandelier" is (an over the shoulder ammunition belt)

This is the setup I think I'd feel most secure with (against dropping etc), and I've seen Moose Peterson demo reversing the strap to ensure the lens faces down/in wards - so a cobmbinations sounds good.

The stock Nikon (came with D90) strap seems a little short for this to work well, as whilst the camera can be carried like this, it cannot comfortably be used. Yes it reaches my face, but the strap's too tight. I have a couple of cm each side of slack, but not a huge amount

So I guess simply a longer strap will help.

Like the look of that. Intend buying one today.

The supplied camera strap I have is too short to wear bandolier fashion and having my camera and tele-zoom slung round my neck is so uncomfortable that it is taking a lot of pleasure out of going for a walk.

Some of us grew up watching Cowboy films on a black and white TV, the bad guys always wore them :D

The basic OPTECH strap should be long enough, and they are really comfortable, this is the one I use (up to D300 & 300mm f4 weight) LINK

I am seriously considering one of these expensive I know but they have great reviews, and I seem to remember seeing a video on the tinternet showing thats its possible to wear it under a jacket to hide your camera a little

This look like the strap on my laptop bag (which I use to carry my tripod).
I have been thinking of a day walkabout bag and have seen this one look good I think, anyone got one?

I've looked a little more at straps -- and used my d90 a little more. Thoughts so far:
* I found carrying the camera on-shoulder (lens down) very convenient and unobtrusive whilst getting around town -- far far superior to around neck *except* I had to hold the strap with one finger -- just in case it slipped

* No way I can justify an upstrap or similar
* Shortlist appears to be
** stick with stock --
** Optech Pro
** Optech EZ Comfort
** Lowepro transporter.
** jessops (own brand)

Of these the optech/pro appears to be the best as it appears to have extra rubber padding for the shoulder which may make things a little more secure. (presumably the "quick release" tabs -- which I don't think I'll need -- are *very* secure...)

Have I missed any options in this price bracket?
Any disadvantages in the optech pro (bulk/width of strap?)
secure camera attachments?
easy to adjust?
robust?
Am I going over-the-top in choice for a casual beginner?
Any better prices than here

Not researched ebay? Many fake op/techs around?

Yes, I'd seen the R-strap.

It looks absolutely fantastic, but at 59 EUR + shipping you're talking 65-70 UKP!

So the interesting question is whether there are any other cheaper options that can be worn in a similar way. Right now one annoyance is to have to remove the camera off my shoulder, to hold in hand (danger of dropping) to take a shot -- or to awkwardly hang around neck temporarily.

I'm hoping the longer optech strap may allow me to wear the camera across the chest, it would be great if anyone could confirm they've done this.

Maybe I should just save for the r-strap. Not convinced by making my own (security of fastenings etc)
