Hi folks

I'm after a half decent sling type strap and have read about recommendations, blackrapid, q-strap etc

Am i really missing something that they all seem to screw into the tripod connector screw?
I'm not sure i fancy this..
1. Surely the points the standard strap fits to is purpose built for this
2. It seems like it might be a pain in the arse to remove it every time i want to use a tripod.

Help :) Can anyone recommend a comfortable sling strap without the tripod fitting??

i think theyre designed like that because with a normal strap the camer sits with the lens pointing out. Sling straps are designed so the lens point down the line of your body.
More comfortable and less angled stress on the mount when using larger lenses.
It take 2 seconds to remove and put on. If im shooting with a pod, then i generally put everything in my bag and carry both, if just camera then on goes sling.

It's also when you have a largish lens on your camera you can connect it to the lens saves all the weight being o the camera connection

Google Optech

Google Optech

:plusone:

The Optech series can attach to your camera's strap mount on the side using some clever connectors. You can also clip it into their wrist strap attachment and turn it quickly from a sling to a strap. The only thing to bear in mind though is that the strap gets in a way when you turn the camera to shoot portrait. You can modify your technique to get around this but personally.....i attached the connector to the tripod mount using a fastener! :geek:

If you put the strap on your shoulder, or across your chest diagonally with the prism housing against your body the lens will hang downwards.

No need for a fancy dan strap, the basic optech one will do the trick

The pro strap and sling adapter combo look good, anyone with experience of these?

Blackrapid screw has a thick rubber washer. A few turns will secure it to the camera, doesn't have to be completely tight.

I use a custom arca plat designed for my camera, with handstrap attached, the plat has separate screw holes for tripod mount accessories. Then use Q-strap with BR screw as strap, attach and removal is just a few turns.

some tripod plates has screw holes on its screw, this is a very bad design because using that also loosens the screw.

Is there such a thing so you can use say a black rapid strap that allows you to carry the lens and camera with the strap but allow you to quickly connect it to a monopod without having to unscrew the strap first via the screw on the monopod,as the connector on the rapid strap just goes into the lens mount hole you need thanks

Yup - used the Op/Tech sling when I had my DSLR. Worked reasonably well. I was using the "Pro-loop" "Uni-loop" connectors which don't leave much dangling from the camera when you remove the strap. I also needed some extenders as I'm quite tall (6'2") and like to have the camera slung quite low (waist height) whilst wearing it across the shoulder bandolier-style.

Now moved to MFT so don't use it anymore - you've reminded me I need to sell it - thanks! :)

Edit: just for clarity, this wasn't intended as an "invitation to treat" - I'll post it up in the For Sale section when I've dug it out of the cupboard!

I'm currently researching, to purchase a new strap, after an accident with my q-strap.

These products might be off interest to you -

Go on then what happend

Camera came away from carbiner. Broken gate on carbiner. Haven't a clue how it happened as I'm always careful to ensure that the carbiner is locked.

Damaged Nikon D90, but a least the metal lens hood, on my 80-200 saved the lens.

Regardless, of which strap I purchase, I'll be adding in an additional safety loop.

Tim, where did you purchase the extra carbiner, or did you have to buy two straps?

I have the carry speed fs slim, the way the strap connects to the adapter allows you to still use your monopod/tripod as normal.
There is another fs model which has 2 attachments one for camera and one for lens.

I think it was amazon, about a tenner if I remember correctly.

Have a look but with little success. Any chance you'd be able to hunt out a link for me?

Cheers

I was using Black Rapid but switched to Carry Speed a while ago. I use the folding plate they sell (arca plate +pin). As a bonus, with just a little metal removal the pins also work with my spyder-pro holsters. I'll often use the pin on a lens foot instead of the camera body for longer lenses.

edit: I should note that one of my CS straps died in about 4 months...the neoprene ripped almost in two. Now, I use it to carry a D4 w/ a 400 f/2.8 + SharpShooter Camera Mount which ends up in the 15lb range, and they were VERY good about responding and getting me a replacement.

is that via a quick release plate or just the screw(which is what i want to do)

Confused,so is there a strap that connects to the camera that can be used via the monopod screw not quick release plate without having to be removed first cheers guys

Now I am confused.

The strap connects to the camera via 2 options. You have the first ball connector that screws straight into the base of the camera.
The second connector screws into the base of the camera, but it has a plate that allows you to screw either the Q/R plate or monopod/tripod directly into it.

thanks reidy for that will have a look,,,looks like the only one that does this unless anyone knows different although they look a bit of a rarity to get hold of

I got mine off ebay, delivery was a few days.

Thanks again reidy do you know the weight limit on these plates/sling joints can't seem to find it

Had exactly the same thing happen to me with the connector on two different q-straps (old and the cheaper feeling new style) I was lucky in that my camera never hit the floor but I certainly wouldn't touch another q-strap.

I think if you check out some of the independent reviews on youtube, it is mentioned there. Seems as sturdy as others on the market.

Wow. Thanks for all the responses. I have to say I'm more confused than ever :) I'd best get researching :)

Regardless of which strap, you intend purchasing, I'd advising having a secondary means of support, e.g. additional attachment point on camera, etc.

Q-Strap and a 1D mkIV EF 70-200 f2.8 IS L

I carry it like this all day, I put a pit of heatshrink on to stop it unscrewing and a split ring for just in case.
