Camera stolen at wedding - gutted *Update*

kelack is onto a good idea here. I think if you can get the local press involved with the slant on local photographer loses equipment but also Brides day ruined by camera thieves stealing photos of the big day. If nothing else it will alert all of the local camera shops and cash converter type places who may remember some crack head trying to sell kit beyond his comprehension. There are a good few togs here with links to local papers I would imagine can't they shake some branches in the local rag offices? May be an idea to visit local shops to see if the kit is on display although if it was a guest then they could have taken it anywhere.

Darren came up with it first ;):D

UV pens are normaly issued free by crime prevention officers at your local police station. I know it's after the horse has bolted but still a good idea to mark your gear up. If you tell us which area maybe we could all help by looking on local sale sites shops etc.

I'd have a word with Edi Gary... wasn't he on about stealing wedding rings the other day? AND he was after wedding images for a website? :suspect:

As everyone else says... there's some scum around nowadays. :shake:
And I hope you get everything sorted in your favour.

Oh dear, Colin......I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you got enough images on your back up camera to keep the B&G happy......then perhaps you could arrange a re-shoot? The venue might allow you to get a few folk together and re-create a few group shots.

My wedding photographer lost our film, or rather the processing lab did, and he offered to do just that. We didn't bother, just got all the guests to provide copies of their shots, but it's a thought.

Hope this gets resolved soon.

The hotel might not be pleased with the adverse publicity but, as Kelly says, it might give you more of a chance of getting it back. Also contact local processing stores with pictures of the bride and groom just in case anyone is daft enough to try and get the images printed?

I borrowed my Mum's camera, many years ago, when I went on honeymoon. It has some of her pictures of our wedding and all our ours for the week we were away and on the way back we visited my grandmother - tiny country lane - and someone broke into the car and stole most of our stuff - we still had the wedding horseshoe etc hanging up in it so it was obvious what was likely to be on the camera but they nicked it anyway ;(

Words cannot describe my thoughts on these lowlife sorts. If they want a camera, why don't they get off their fat a***s, and work hard to enable them to buy a one, the way we have all done. Ahhh, but that is living in an ideal world, which we are far, far from doing. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their crotch, and may their arms be way too short to scratch it. Good luck.

thought flickr had an exif enabled searc

edit: think I am wrong

yoshi you are right.. it's just an undocumented hack.. but limited to aperture focal length etc.. http://mlowry.blogspot.com/2008/01/flickr-exif-search-part-2.html

Maybe a few of the big sites have systems in place behind the scenes that would notify you if images are uploaded using your serial number? It might be worth e-mailing them, if all else it might make them consider implementing the feature.

Sorry to hear that Colin, some people are the absolute scum of the earth.

Camera serial number IS embedded in EXIF from a D300 and D700, depending on how they are processed (JPEG, via Capture NX etx)

Chances are the lot will be sold to some poor unsuspecting sod on Ebay or in the local pub :(

It would be a bold move I know, but maybe places like TP could only allow the very high value equipment such as camera bodies to be sold with either a copy of the original recipt c/w name and address or some sort of manufacturers registration linked to the seller of the items.

Not too sure how this could work out though I'm just full of good ideas :)

Tis a good idea, but unless every person selling/buying a camera was going to check the receipt, pointless.

Alas the nasty people of the world profit.

I am sure that more than one person on TP is using a nicked camera without being aware of it.

I bet with this one, if they don't have a clue about camera's, they will sell the body with the lens, without realising the value of the lens.....

When I sold a D700 to Wail here.. he certainly got all the purchase info.

The flip-side of this is that I sold my D60 before Christmans, and again included purchase info. For some reason it was re-sold about 3 times, and I saw my purchase reciept (with my full name and address and also receipt with some credit card details!) also change hands.. so folks I didn't even know where getting my name and stuff. I no longer do that.

Bit OT, but just giving a flip-side!

is a good idea, but I'm not sure its workable. A forum like this people *know* each other, and so it seems likely to me that a new seller would stick out like a sore thumb trying to shift that sort of high end gear.

Hugh

This really sucks. Very sorry for you and fingers crossed it still turns up somehow, or at least the pictures do.

Agreed - although if a newbie joined and started signing up and selling things, due diligence would be ask for reciepts..

I'm not going to mention who the seller was but I've avoided buying one stolen item on here by asking for a serial number (it was on Sigma UK list from items nicked back in their burglary a year or so back)

Very sorry to hear this. Utter scum. What happens regarding the hired lens?

A good idea but simply wouldn't work in practice, how would you know what my local dealers recipt looked like, it could be easily forged, and then I bet theres lots of people who have simply lost or misplaced the real recepts.
The real deterrant is proper sentences when they catch people, a £30 fine and "don't be a naughty boy" isn't going to deter some scum yob.

Might be worth getting the B&G to check all your pictures to see if there is anyone in them they don't recognise, just in case you snapped the culprit without knowing it.

That is a good idea! im certainly going to be looking closly at the backgrounds on the shots taken in that area!

Colin, iv only read the first page of this thread but i will be reading through it later on.

Im so sorry that even with the two of us there this happened.. and it troubles me to think that we must have interacted with the scum at some point, and probably have them pictured, maybe WITH the B&G! you just never know.. We must have searched right round the area it'd been stashed! It really frustrates me that we could have been staring right at it without knowing..

Your distraction was a little obvious, to me at least, you held your head and kept your cool at a very trying time Colin, you should be proud of yourself, im sure a lesser man would have thrown in the towel under the circumstances! im sure Matt & Hannah appreciate the professionalism your showed.

Lets hope its all a simple miss placement and turns up in due course.. If nothing else.. its a good excuse for shopping for a 700! ;)

Looking forward to next month mate..

All the best.

I would get the bride and groom to mention to their guests that half the photos were lost due to the theft, to see if anyone has a guilt trip.

they dont want a camera , the **** for brain scum wont even be able to work it , all the see is something of value , that value is then converted into their drug of choice

makes you feel sick, i can only imagine the night Colin went through last night, heartbreaking stuff having to tell the wedding couple that some of the ir pics cannot be delivered because of some scumbag.

really hope you at least get the photo's back, though in reality, not likely :(

Unless Ive missed it, what have the B+G thought to this? :(

we had a point + shoot stolen when we were in rome, didn't give a toss about the camera, just the shots of my eldest brother captaining england students in the rugby world cup! absolutely gutting.

Hope you get things sorted asap, and that the b+g are understanding

Commiserations etc., Colin. Along with all the other suggestions, you could stick up a web-page with the gear's details. It can be linked from your homepage invisibly, using {display: none;} CSS, so Google will spider it but only people looking for the info are likely to come across it. You never know, a few years hence someone might check out the kit they've just bought, and help in solving the case.

Beats me why folk leapt to the defence of a dealer that tried to sell me a below-par lens with the serial number removed.

Tonight on fleabay someone flogged nine pieces of gear for getting on for £4k. All of it, including the body, were described as without boxes and manuals. The seller normally flogs kids' clothing.

Just read this post in full.

Sorry to hear your bad news Hacker (Colin ?). Absolte b*****ds whoever took it.

Like probably most of us here, I too have covered weddings and events, and put kit down for a few mins thinking it will be safe ..... gutted to hear yours wasn't.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this is just the result of an honest mistake, and that your kit turns up. Unlikely, but let's hope so.

Failing that, let's hope the police / guests / footage can get something.

Cheers

Anth

How some people sleep I don't know!!!!

What utter b*******

So sorry to hear this Colin

thieving little gits, they need their hands cutting off.

chances of sucess from cctv are slim ..... hate to say it but most places have budget cameras on a budget recorder using poor lenses...... and to add to that the camera has to be pointing in exactly the right place, and most oiks on the rob have sussed this out.if by chance they have a motion activated dome camera on the building (unlikley do to cost) then you MAY get a usuable image, else you'll get nothing but barely viewable pixels and if its on VCR well best of luck

i feel for you as its an expensive bit of kit to lose, but please dont rely on CCTV for evidence ( its an argument i have daily with my customers)

:( So sorry to hear about this Colin. I hope justice and a large helping of karma find their way to the right people.

Really bad luck Hacker, hope this gets resolved.

It is things like this that make an assistant a necessity these days if only to look after the extras. Colin I feel for you Mate and hope it gets resolved. The removal of all the buggers sole possessions need burning when they find them if only to give them to taste of their own medicine.

He had one, and I tell you what, its a brave theif that looks at Colin and Tony and even thinks about nicking gear because neither of them are short weedy types :cuckoo:

Any news yet Colin?
